So my husband and son rescued a feral kitten from a bush in a yard they were working in. The kitten eyes were crusted over and he could hardly open them. Plus he was very small and hot outside. So they brought him home to me. I gave him kitten milk and took him to the vet the next day. He only weighed 13 oz's and she said he would not have lived much longer.

So she gave me medicine and told me to feed him etc. it's been several months now and he is a totally different cat. I saw a commercial from the SPCA that said to get your animals neutered at 4 months old. When I asked the vet she said 6 months old. Here is really what my question is, I want to get him neutered before he starts spraying. So who is right?

This kitten happens to be the love of my husbands life. He waits for my husband to get up and he is just really mischievous. He takes the thing to hold the water in the tub out of the bathroom and we find it all over the house. He is now to big to fit under the couch thank god because our toes were not safe.

I want to do what's best for him but I am getting 2 different answers. What have you guys done.

Thanks

Ps. I do have a picture of him on my page if you want to see him I am not to good with computers so I do not know how to add him to my signature. I will also be adding more pictures.

PPSS that cat can fall asleep anywhere and in any position. It's unreal

My mom's cat was 2 to 3 months old when I had him neutered. He never once sprayed and live to the ripe old age of 16. He was also a wonderful and intelligent cat with a sense of humor. He had no health problems until old age caught up with him.
I admire what you and your husband have done.

I took mine home from the humane society shelter at about 4 months and they had already been neutered (they don't adopt out un spayed or neutered animals).

Cakeladie, there are lots of different opinions about when to spay neuter. I believe most vets wait until six months. The local SPCA does it when they weigh 2 pounds, rather than go by age. I had one of my male cats neutered when he was 4 months. The folks at the vet's office wanted to wait until he was six months olf. I told them he was trying to breed his sister and I wanted him neutered NOW! I have a friend whose father used to neuter her kittens with a pocket knife as soon as their testicles showed.

What is the kitten doing that you want to neuter him?
Thanks for this!

Other then raising h*ll with Sunny and trying to attack everything under the sun nothing. I just don't want him to spray and I know getting it down when they are young is easier. But our vet said 6 months but the SPCA has commercials out that says 4 months so I was not really sure. I really do not want to take him to another vet but I would like to get it done when it's the proper time and before he starts to spray. Does that make sense?

Sure that makes sense. But it sounds like he's acting like a pretty typical 4 month old kitten. I'm not sure neutering him will stop the behavior.

Maybe your local SPCA would neuter them for you?
Thanks for this!

So happy to hear you have rescued a kitten. I have worked in cat rescue for many years un the UK. and we always advised neutering at 6 months old. Earlier can cause problems in later life.
He probably won't start spraying unless he feels threatened, his normal urine will not get strong smelling until he is a lot older and if there are older cats in your home he will probably have the good sense to mind his manners.
Scent marking (spraying) is usually about letting outsiders know it is his territory.

Enjoy his kitten antics, they are so much fun as well as relaxing to play with or just to watch, my cats and kittens have helped me through some very rough patches and given me something to smile about when I so down that I thought nothing could.
