This story is both heartwarming and heart wrenching. Our fur babies are family members. One huge change since Katrina hit in 2005 is that rescuers were allowing people to bring pets along. When my area was hit by repeated hurricanes in 2004 I took the cats and dog with me, but had to leave the horses behind. Thankfully they were all fine (terrified, but physically unhurt), but I was worried sick about them. I honestly don't know what I would do if I was forced to decide between being rescued and leaving the critters behind of staying with them. I suspect I might end up staying.

Thanks, liz. It is hard to leave pets, not knowing if they'll be okay.
