So, I have concluded I need to put off the dog thing for now. I am just not stable enough psychiatricallly at the moment. But what about a kitty? Do people think a cat could occasionally help cheer me up? I had one for many years and am confident I could care for one, even now. I know what to do in my sleep. i love cats. Just wondering if folks thought it might help me feel any less isolated or not. Thanks.

In my opinion, pets can be the best part of a person's life. They can be loving and silly at the same time and just brighten up a home. Their personalities are so distinctive! And figuring out their names is fun!!
Kitties can be independent too, thankfully, if their litter is clean and they have food and water, they are good to go. What do you think? How does that sound to you? __________________ "Love you. I agree with HappyCrafter, I believe animals have such positive energy cause its pure and real. Since you've had one in the past then you already know what it takes to care for them, so it's your choice to decide if you're ready for that. A kitty would be a great choice I think and he/she can definitely help u feel less isolated. Maybe you could even get one from a shelter then that way you will help each other out.

My cat definitely makes me feel less isolated. He was an older rescue from the shelter. He was 5 or 6 when I brought him home and he clung to me. He's mellowed out now and doesn't have to be next to me anymore but he does come into which ever room I'm in. As I type this he is in his bed in front of the sliding glass doors about 3 feet away. On nights I can't sleep he comforts me. I think a kitty is an excellent idea

If you want the ease of a cat with the attention of a dog I hear Siamese are great for that...my cousin had one and a friend even took hers out on a boat with her. I guess what I’m saying is some breeds are more loving and active than others....I ve known some cats that just hide out all the time...of course individuals vary within a breed so make sure you spend some time and get the cat you want.

Bpcyclist, my cats fill me up. I have six with distinctly different personalities, but it's a guarantee that if I need loving at least one of them will come cuddle with me. New Year's Eve four of them snuggled with me on the sofa.
Good for you for recognizing you are not in a good place to take on a dog right now. I disagree that cats or dogs are better. Both can show us love, but dogs are more work. They have to be walked, etc. Someone suggested checking out you local animal shelter. Excellent idea! Go, hang out with the kitties that are there. The one meant for you will pick you out. |

People think dogs are better companions than cats but I disagree. Cats are GREAT companions and provide a LOT of emotional support. Since you are not stable enough from a psychiatric POV, then yes, a cat makes a perfect companion. I would get 2 cats if I were you. 2 cats can keep each other company. How Cats Help Improve Mental Health | The Catnip Times A cat's purr provides healing emotional comfort. Plus, when they sleep on top of your head, or chirp or chatter at you; your heat will melt into the floor. If you are not able to get 2 cats, then 1 cat will suffice. I say, go for it! You won't regret it! They are awesome companions, cats! |

My cat always knows when I’m upset and then is a lot more affectionate. She sits next to me or on my chest to comfort me. This is a street kitty that I rescued.

I recently adopted a terrier from the County and it has been an unbelievable amount of work. He is so, so funny but should really have a couple of kids or another dog to play with because he is so high energy. I often take him to the dog park. He runs like a greyhound , actually running laps around the perimeter of the dog park while the little lap dogs sniff each other. So funny. He was almost completely untrained. Who’s training who? LOL! You know a lot about dogs, so you'll be fine when you’re ready

If you are thinking about the responsibility of looking after a cat maybe you could try fostering for a little bit. The food is paid for and you dont have to commit. That will help you to decide for sure.

I agree that fostering is a good way to test run owning a pet. My first room mate wanted to get a cat, but decided to foster first. She decided that taking care of a cat was too much work.
Now I'm lucky, My current room mate has a cat that he totally looks after and I just get to enjoy her snuggles. splitimage |

Ok, so, what do you think? What cha gonna do? Foster or visit an humane society and see how you feel about it?
You know, I have had a number of pooters in my life and ALL have had different personalities. That always astounds me how consistent and different animals personalities are. All hilarious in many ways, but all different. __________________ "Love you. Take care of you. Be true to you. You are the only you, you will ever know the best. Reach for YOUR stars.
