Cats aren't pets. Humans are the pets. Or servants. They enslaved humans 10,000 years ago when we started practicing agriculture. The cats kept the mice away from the grain.

I've heard more than once that cats domesticated themselves. They discovered that being around humans came in handy. And the Egyptians even worshiped them.
