The first cat my family had was grey and white, my current cat is also grey and white. This might sound crazy, but I just love the look of the grey and white on a cat and would seriously consider another grey and white cat (and the cat after that and the cat after that)
Dogs are a bit different. The first family dog was a German Shepherd, and I would love to own a GSD at some point, but I know no dog GSD or not could compete with Sarge. I don't know if I want my first dog to be a GSD. I'm thinking my first dog should be a Boston Terrier. I did a lot of research on the Boston Terrier and they sound like they would be an even better fit for me than a GSD...they'd be a good first dog for me. I had a conversation with someone who's owned a few schnauzers and other breeds in the mix as well. She's a dog person, but as much as she swears by the schnauzers, she's had other breeds as well. I'm a cat person, and my cat happened to bond with me really well, but I happen to really like the look of the grey and white the best, but this friend says, "never buy an animal based on looks". So I'm curious, have you always stuck with one breed because you liked the first one so much, did you try a different breed? Did you try all sorts of breeds? I'm just curious the thought processes of "I like this breed in particular" versus maybe someone who tried a different breed and what their experiences were. It's a bit of a ramble, but I'm just curious how you picked your breed and if you swear by the breed or if you're not afraid to try out a new breed as well. |

Our first dog was a Pomeranian, I was about eight. I was excited to have a dog but didn’t bond with him, he was sort of stupid. Then when I was nine a friend down the road had a litter of puppies and I fell in love. They were mutts, half old English shepherd and half English setter. She looked just like a bearded collie. I talked my parents into letting me get her. She was the smartest dog. I trained her to do tons of tricks. No dog could ever live up to her. I absolutely believe that mutts make the best breed. But my second dog that I adopted after college was a cocker spaniel. He was a good dog not super great but a good dog. I lived in an apartment so needed a smaller dog. I’ve volunteered for years at shelters and still think mutts make the best dogs even though I’ve only had cats since.

I'm a noob to dogs...the family dogs have consisted of a GSD, a mixed blonde lab, and now a border collie/Texas Blue heeler. So we've had a mix of dogs we've cared for, but I've never cared for a dog of my own...I've got my cat, and I won't get a dog of my own until she passes...I'm not much of a multiple-pet person, it gets really hard to care for so many animals...Evy the cat is my main responsibility, make sure my fish gets food, and occasionally take the dog for a walk. But I've got school that takes up all of my time, so I don't have the time for multiple pets.

My critters are all mutts. Never had a purebred cat or dog. They are all rescues so they all picked me rather than me picking them.
Even my horse is a mutt. Though back in the day we had registered Quarter Horses, but that was because we were breeding them and selling the babies. |

Growing up, we always had dogs, so my post is in regards to dogs.
As for a preferred breed, it's hard to choose since I really love pretty much all dogs regardless of the breed, (although I have to say really not a huge fan of smaller miniature breeds, just not as much to pet and hold and snuggle up with lol) but personality-wise I'd probably go with Rottweilers. We had a Rottweiler named Bullwinkle (with nicknames like Bully-bear, Bully-wully and Bully-wully-bear, though he was anything but a bully :P) who was just the coolest, most amazing and loveable dog I've ever known, let alone lived with and had the privilege of having as my own. (Bullwinkle is on the left, that's his pup Brutus in the middle) When he passed away, it felt exactly like a member of the family had left us, I doubt I'll ever forget him and it hurts to this day thinking about and missing him. __________________ |

Its strange to me to think of Rottweillers as sweet and cuddly and lovable...the movies make them out to be vicious and snarly. But then again, GSDs have a bad rep too but Sarge was a gentle giant who helped raise me and my brother when we were little.

We always thought the same too, mainly because one of our neighbors down the street had a few over the years and their quality of life was... very very, toxic to say the least, so their dogs weren't treated well and were unfriendly. But Bullwinkle and Brutus forever changed the way I feel about the breed and any presumptions I may have had about them before 😀
The house behind my old next door neighbor actually had a German Shepherd. Sad to say he was just kept in a large cage in their backyard pretty much 100% of the time. Could hear his loud thunderous constant barking halfway down the block all day and night (probably just yearning to be freed and/or receive attention :/...) __________________ |

Most of our dogs have been rescues, including two ‘pure’ (a GSD and cavalier King Charles spaniel), a lurcher, trail hound (bred from fox hounds in Cumbria, England, to race over courses that can include barbed wire and other obstacles... the farmers up there apparently plead poverty but can bet a lot of money on these dog races. Our dog didn’t make the cut - she kept turning round and going back home!) Currently we have a Toy poodle mix, rescued from a puppy farm (but we didn’t know at first). I never liked poodles until we got her.
