Are you someone who enjoys having lots of pets, or would you rather devote all your energy to one animal? For me, I am completely devoted to my cat, but I also care for a betta and sometimes I help out with my parents puppy. It can be overwhelming at times, but everyone's different.

when I was a child, I never had more than 1 pet- a dog who died, a rabbit who died, a budgie who I had because I was mannic and didn't really want it

no pets now though: not in a position to look after them

I'm laughing at me, not you Lark. I am definitely a multiple pet person. I have six cats, a dog, a horse, a chicken and put food out for wild birds.

((LL)) I know you have lots of animals. How do you care for all of them? Do you have a favorite out of all of them?

I'm not sure how to answer how I care for them. It's just part of my daily routine.

If I had to pick favorites it would be a tie between Mikey and Miette. Both are cats. I don't know if you've ever had a pet you just bonded with from the get go. It was like that for me with both of them. I bottle raised Mikey. He was about two weeks old when he came into my life. BG, the dog, brought Miette to me one day. She grabbed my heart the first time I saw her.

I have two cats. I had just my first cat for the longest time but then decided he might do better with a friend. So I found my second cat. It took a while for them to adjust but now they play and have a good time. I'm glad I have them both. I would love to have a dog too. But that may be too much work for me.

I don’t even know how I bumped on this thread

Well I have to say I am a “no pet” person. Not because I don’t like pets or had no pets at some point.

I just don’t want additional responsibility and worries (i always worry if they are ok which I find stressful).

I also like flexibility of being able to pick up and go with short notice: travel, move or go somewhere for emergency. I’ve been in situations where I had to fly overseas in emergency like buy a ticket now and fly tonight. No arrangements needed. Can’t do with pets.

I guess I like to be “prepared” so to speak.

I’m a one pet person because of my income. I’m on SSDI so don’t feel I have the resources for accidents and or sickness if I had more than one. It’s also why I have a cat instead of a dog, less expensive. But I love pets and if I were to win the lottery I’d have more. My cat gets along with dogs but doesn’t care for other cats so I’d get dogs. Big ones.

I used to have more but they died or got killed. I joke that Henrietta is going to be the first chicken in the country to die of old age.

Lark, I was thinking about your question regarding caring for the crew earlier tonight. After working, making a run to the library and a major grocery shop I did not get home until after dark. I was muttering curses as I had to use the headlights on the truck while I medicated the horse with the eye injury, fed the horses and put their winter blankets on them.

Then I got to come in the house, sort out the cats so they could be fed. All while trying to not trip over them because they were under foot yelling at me because dinner was late. Added to the six cats under foot was the 70 pound dog who was also under foot. I ended up bellowing at the lot of them to shut up and get out from under my feet.

We have multiple pets (cats) because of our daughter. There was a feral cat whom multiple houses in the neighborhood were feeding. When she had a litter, my daughter secretly brought them into the house. She would let the feral cat come and go via her window. After a while, we found out because of the meowing but let the kittens stay until they were big enough to be put out. That litter was two males and two females. The "masculine" male ran away early on and we don't know what happened to him. We got the females and the male fixed and they come and go (as far as coming into the house) and are fed in the morning and evening by my husband. I think the male from this litter is my daughter's favorite and he spends time in her room everyday but she lets him out when he asks. He has the most gentle spirit of this litter. One of the females is a real beauty, very confident and bossy, loves cuddles and has adopted both us and the girl next door (spends time in both of our homes). Unfortunately, the original feral cat had another litter of four--one didn't survive, heartbreaking, born very sick and there were three others who were girls--one that looks like our bossy cat but is the most gentle and because she was injured now is a permanent indoor cat, plus two other cats--my husband's favorite is a completely black cat from this litter--she spends a lot of time in his office. Now all of the cats, including the original feral cat (who we haven't seen for a long time) have been fixed by us. When these cats fight (the fights are because the female cats from the first litter want to dominate the second litter), we end up bringing the second litter inside. The male from the first litter plays and gets along with them all. Because he is the biggest, they don't pick on him but he is sweet to all of them. So we have six cats but never have all six inside at once--that would be bedlam....

That's awesome, Tuned Out! I'd be just like your daughter, and I'd be in heaven taking care of six cats.

And thanks LL for the update! I can imagine all the cats and dogs all begging for food.

I love my kitty so much and always will. But I wish I could have more pets. I would have so many pets if I could, alas I can only have one.

I have two cats. An older one (she's 16) and one that is 2 1/2. My Mom has a dog. I care for all of them in the morning with their food and stuff and then my Dad does the nighttime feeding. I do my diabetic cat's shots unless like this morning she hadn't bothered to get to eating yet and we all play with the dog. Next cat I get I want one that will sit in my lap. Amelia will sometimes in the mornings but it has to be quiet and the dog can't be bothering her. Esther will sit on the side of me but it's kind of rare. She prefers to sit with my Mom or take a mid-day snooze with my Dad. I'm not home mid-day except on weekends so maybe that is why she prefers to sit with my parents. Plus I think she has never forgiven me for bringing home Amelia.

I have one dog, but I also take care of my mother's beagle. My dog is an American Eskimo rescue. I had a cat before, but he was very independent and did not like being pet etc. I prefer only having one pet.

We have one dog, though for a few years we had two. My brother also has two dogs and a grumpy tortoise I sometimes take care of. Mum is more responsible for our dog, though I help, and I’m totally responsible for my brother’s pets when I’m taking care of them.
If I were on my own I wouldn’t have a pet, though I adore animals. I don’t think I could really handle the responsibility long term.

When my wife threw me out the judge allowed me to take one of our four terriers. We always had 3 or 4 of the little beasts. Especially with the Covid lockdown that little dog gives me something I need, someone to love. She takes full advantage of her position, treating me like a servant, but she is worth it.

We had to quit feeding the birds because the spilled seed attracted rats and in one instance a bear. Bears are very hard on bird feeders. And the rats drove the terriers wild.

It feels good to communicate with people so if I get any encouragement I will try to stay with this forum for a while.
