I don’t have a cat now, but my T does, and I swear I’ve never seen a cat and their owner (or “staff” lol) so in tune with each other. She has started to tolerate my presence more - T says she feels safer round quiet people (like me), but doesn’t like strangers much.

Your T must be a cat whisperer. I'm trying to figure my cat out, and I'm making progress.

Thanks for this article. I can safely say that Helen displays many of these behaviors. I think she still secretly likes my Dad more than me but my Dad is home with her all day whereas I go to work!

My guy gets up from a sound sleep to follow us into different rooms. And his purrs are loud. But he only meows if he’s stressed. Like when I’m clipping his nails.

Cat 'personalities' are all so different. I get a bit annoyed when people try to generalize about cats...I've had a cat in my life for most of my life, and I've never had two who were the same, or even close. So, thanks Traveling Lady, for the chance to share about these special little critters and how they demonstrate their love for us, which is a remarkable thing, as all cat lovers will confess!

We have a bonded pair (boy & girl) that were rescue kitties, and they've been living with us for 10 years now. Boy kitty is a real wild child, and in spite of the fact he was neutered at a young age, he's still pretty courageous and fairly aggressive at times. So, we came to the conclusion a few years ago that he was one of the one-in-a-hundred or so male cats who maintain their dominance and their old ways, even after they've been fixed. (It's a thing. You can Google it.)

He does have his sweetheart moments, though. He does turn on the charm when he wants something, and in those moments, you'd never guess he was ever the wild-eyed rascal that he really is. He loves to head-butt you when he's really happy and lovey-dovey. And he does the little circle happy dance that cats are famous for --- and even purrs, but only rarely.

Now, our girl kitty, who is boy kitty's bestie (and is ever-patient, still adoring, and devoted to him) is the sweetest little thing you could ever meet. She was scared of her own shadow, when she arrived in our home, so I couldn't help but imagine she'd been through some tough times, and boy kitty was her hero on more then one occasion. (The folks at the shelter did not know their back story, so it was left to my imagination to dream up a scenario under which they met and bonded.)

It has taken her 7 of the last 10 years to relax enough and develop enough trust in me to the point she will periodically come and ask to "snuggle", which means a nap on my lap with a blanket covering my legs. She has also developed the habit (and this is amazing) of greeting me every day with quiet little kisses and mews when I first wake up. This, to me, is tantamount to a miracle, because in spite of my blundering clumsiness and sputtering, unattractive wake-up moments, she insists on doing this ritual EVERY SINGLE DAY. She is the sweetest creature on the planet, and has earned herself a number of loving nicknames, foremost being 'Little Mommy'.

Some days are still so difficult and fraught with a million troubled questions about our existence. But these small, comical, interesting friends keep me going, they literally do.

Heh heh I don’t think Sir is loving on me today!, I bought his crate up from the basement and he ran to hide,…although he’s not hidden very well, he’s in his tall bed in the living room. He’s usually where we are but his crate is in this room. He gets his annual shots today. Last time I took him to the vet was for his weight and they drew blood. He didn’t like that too much. He used to like vets but in his old age his not liking them anymore. He’s a good traveler tho.

My very spoiled cat, Caroline, shows she's mad at me quite obviously. If she wants to go out, she stands in front of the door. If I don't open it, she meows and swats at me. Same with my not responding to her desire for cat treats, for playing with her, etc,

Yet, she often crawls up beside me in my chair and purrs away--and usually sleeps with me.

Yes, I have also found a big difference in cat's personalities.

My cats hate me. The orange one ignores me and is still really hesitant despite having him for almost 4 years. The other one yowls at me and chews on things. My other guy who I had to put to sleep would cuddle with me. But then the orange one would get in the way because he’d get jealous despite not liking me anyways. No one in the house really likes the cats. I still feed them really good expensive cat food though.
