I saw today that the ASPCA had a download able form to set up a trust for pets. Went to the website, filled out all the information they wanted to send me the forms. Then before I could submit the request they required me to make a donation! Talk about bait and switch! There was nothing about making a donation until the very end.

It really pissed me off when I discovered I can download the forms from other sites for free!

That was low of them. I don’t much care for their advertisements either where they show abused and starving animals.

I either hit mute or change the channel when their ads come on. Don't know if it's true, but I heard a huge amount of what they take in does NOT go to the animals.

The best nationwide animal rescue group is Best Friends. The majority of their donations goes to caring for the animals. The facilities they provide are astonishing.

Yeah while they are showing starving animals they are saying how you will get a plush animal and a t shirt. When I give money for a cause I don’t want them spending money on tshirts and shipping. That always irritates me. Thanks for the tip, I hadn’t heard of Best Friends.

Their web address is

Homepage | Best Friends

86% of their income goes to the critters. The care they offer is fantastic. In addition to helping animals find forever homes they provide a permanent home to animals who are not adoptable for one reason or another.

I first heard about Best Friends when I read a book about how the sanctuary was created. Title is Best Friends.

Back to the ASPCA and their ads. I'm with you. Don't send me stuff if I donate. Use the money to help the critters. Ads that show starving animals, sick kids, starving old folks, etc. have the opposite effect on me. I know they are attempting to manipulate me. I hit mute or change the channel while pledging to NEVER donate to them.

The RSPCA in the UK do the same type of TV ads; I admit I occasionally shop in/donate to small local branches, but it generally ends up being more for my benefit than theirs. It does do some good, but not as much as one would like or is led to believe.

Yeah, has the opposite effect on me too.

I really liked the no kill shelter I volunteered at in Texas but they did parter up with ASPCA. When we did outreach we had their pamphlets on hand. But the shelter did a lot of good at the local level. Free vaccine, free neuter and spay clinics 4 times a year. Working with hot meals on wheels to get care for shut ins pets and hand out food to them.

There's a local shelter I am considering volunteering at after I retire.

That’s a great idea, lizardlady. The Mind group I was in years ago volunteered for a while at a place out in the sticks, mostly cleaning the cat house and walking dogs.
