Well I have good news and bad news.
There was one test outstanding and it does indicate he has hyperthyroid. I am not thrilled about this because it means a lot of work for me.... (new drugs) possible side effects -- right when I have to to back to work... but I am happy because I know something is wrong here and last week it appeared like whatever it was would not be easily found. But this does explain a lot of his symptoms... such as throwing up and losing weight. I look forward to him feeling better and more happy. The only thing is that I am not 100% sure about this vet. IMHO they have misdiagnosed my cat before -- puffing something up that wasn't really necessary -- and so I will probably be double checking the diagnosis. |

So I asked for the records and they were really slow about getting them to me. In fact it was quite the knock down fight. But once I got them I was horrified. Thyroid usually has two tests that tell the tale. 1. Total T4. The normal range is 1 to 4.0. (more important test) 2. If the Total T4 is not abnormal sometimes a high "Free T4" can tell the tale. If the free T4 is very high... The normal range is 10-50. My cat's results Total T4: 2.7 Free T4: 58 So at best he is "slightly" abnormal. I checked with many hyperthyroid cat forums and they tell me all of their cats were much higher. Like free T4 over 100. They also tell me the Free T4 should never diagnose the disease unless it is off the charts and this is slightly abnormal. (Which they said can be caused by a host of other things). Their suggestion is just watchful waiting. Not to mention that the medication dose they gave him was way too high. And when I questioned it with the doctor he stuck to it with imho no good reason. He actually said the blood tests don't always tell the extent of the disease, really? I mean if the blood tests don't then what does? Do we just start giving meds just in case? So, since my cat continues to throw up, I am going to have to go to another vet. I guess it is my error for trusting them again. |
