I think I've posted before that Beeg is terrified of loud noises. My trashy neighbors started shooting guns this afternoon. He has been glued to me ever since. I'll confess I yelled at him some. Trying to work around the house with a 75 pound dog attached to me is extremely inconvenient.

Starting about half an hour ago neighbors all around me started setting off fireworks as well as shooting guns. Beeg is wearing his Thundercoat, has lavender oil rubbed on his ears and I popped a couple of Benydral down his throat. He refuses to leave my side, but seems to be coping otherwise.

Compare that with Mikey. When the immediate neighbors started shooting off fireworks he got up from his nap, growled his displeasure and stalked out of the room.

I kinda picture Beeg as Martin Mull. Soft spoken and quirky.

Definitely not soft spoken. He has a serious "I'm going to eat your liver for lunch" bark.

EDIT:

I've only worked at a pet store for three months, but unfortunately, some animals just need to ride through their triggers. I had a lady in saying she tried a dozen different medications that did nothing for the dog's anxiety. I felt sorry for the dog. I can't recommend anything, so all I can say is by tomorrow morning your dog will forget all about it.

Beeg is not normally an anxious dog, matter of fact he is a happy big ole goof (hence his name) most of the time.

He is a rescue so I don't know if there is a reason for his fear of loud noises. He gets so terrified he could hurt himself in his panic. Over the years we've developed an arsenal of strategies to help keep him calm. I believe it would be cruel to expect him to ride through it.

The trashy neighbors are at it again. From the sound of it I swear they are shooting off a cannon! Beeg is glued to my side. Even the cats are nervous about the noise.

Even today? There were a lot of popping noises last night until like 2 am. And of course injuries and at least 1 death from a stray bullet in detroit. I was afraid to go out on the balcony to watch any fireworks.

Belle and Precious were both shaking like a leaf from the fireworks. I for one wish they were banned and replaced with silent ones.

Do you think the vet can prescribe Doggie Xanax?

SybilMarie, I've read about vet's giving dogs Valium for anxiety. I use Benadryl because it's cheap, I can get it over the counter and it's safe

Yes, vets can prescribe Xanax for dogs. I know a coworker who gives it to her dog. Personally, I would prefer giving a pet a daily anti-depressant like Prozac rather than a benzo though. Fewer side effects, and they are easier to get (not being a controlled substance).

Black Jack doesn't cry at loud noises, but he does like to stay very close to me. Or sometimes he will hid behind the washing machine or under the bed.

I did get a thunder vest for him, but I guess I didn't put it on correctly and he wriggled out. He was not happy with it.

Beeg loves his Thundershirt. He comes running for me to put it on him when he sees my pick it up. It took some practice to learn how to put it on him though.

I am sorry you have to put up with such morons next to you. I have had the same problem and I hate the dates where people think of shooting off loud fireworks.

Lots of dogs and horses stress out big time and run loose and suffer injuries due to fireworks. There are selfish people out there who don’t care.
