It was awesome. I have always arrived after the births, not been right there watching it. So thankful this wasn't a difficult delivery given the weather we were having.

I got the 2nd foal born on the farm too. Thursday night just after arriving at the barn & before the snow started. This one was a colt & so adorable. The mare was a maiden so this was her first foal. Was a more difficult birth for the team because the foal was upside down to start. They got him turned & out with a small tear complication on the mare. Oh my gosh, he had the cutest floppy ears. Tonight is my night back for this week. Will see how many of the 4 overdue were born while I was off since Friday. Checked in Fri afternoon & none but betting at least 2 more by tonight.

Ok, I don't feel so bad almost missing the first mare & just barely getting her into the foaling stall before she delivered after hearing her delivery from last year....lol....her water broke when she was out in the field & she was running around while the foal was coming. Horses definitely do their thing but have found they mostly like to give birth when everything quiets down at night. Such a thrill so see these foals & help them nurse the colostrum their 1st hours after birth

Wow, 3 weeks weeks on the job & 8 of the 9 mares foaling have come while I am there.

I had never witnessed an actual foaling before though I did some breeding while in Calif. So the mares have definitely initiated me. I can now catch them almost before actual water breaks & delivery starts by watching their behaviors & tails. What an amazing experience & the people who do the deliveries are so wonderful to work with & so are the horses.

Getting the foals up to nurse can sometimes be a challenge that someone with more muscle can do better but last night's foal was small enough & strong enough, we did fine through the night. Only had to help get him up when he got in a tight spot in the stall & the straw was too slippery. Guided him onto mom a few times so he could get the colostrum from both sides. What an amazing job....one I never would have imagined was in my future when I was doing computer engineering. Finally my real passion.

Had one mare get mad at me the other night when I was giving her oral meds. Being short, getting their heads high enough to not spit it out is a challenge. Took a couple of tries & she had enough. Next night she pinned her ears when I walked up to her stall to check on her & her colt. Lol....Had the other tall night watch guy give her meds last night. (Made me really realize what a sweet mare my Izzy really was). Dream job, beautiful mares & adorable foals, great people to work with & nice to know they are glad to have me working there too.

I am taking so many photos while on night watch. Lol....we have one poor overdue mare who looks like she swallowed one of those huge exercise balls. Poor girl is really uncomfortable. Our longest overdue mare was due 1/25. I keep extra eyes on her too.

Lol....I was always a night owl, no better way to spend my night than with these mares & foals

Last night was one of those nights. Within my first 1 1/2 hours at the barn, 2 mares went into labor & were delivered. The next one went into labor at midnight (lol, just after the delivery team went home from the first 2. Two fillys & a colt. Then just when the one lady foaling manager was ready to head home a 4th mare didn't eat dinner (when I served it....lol) I knew something was up. We checked her out & no signs of water breaking. She said she was going to go home & take her shoes off & that would definitely make labor happen well, 2 hours later when it was time for me to go home, she still hadn't gone into labor. Maybe the foal was just moving around inside cause she was so uncomfortable & groaning & making horsey faces. I ended up going home & know she was left in the best hands cause the other night watch guy whose shift I overlap with is one of the best too. Some of the foals are more difficult to get up & get nursing after the delivery group make sure everything has been initially accomplished (foal standing on it's own & nursing with some guided help) The straw bedding is slick & the foals struggle to get up so we do help them until they get it figured out & a little stronger. The foals also try to suck on anything close to their mouth & think mom's chest, under her front legs, her stomach, or even the stall wall will produce the milk they are hungry for, so we help guide them to learn where the milk REALLY comes from (lol) some are harder to teach than others so holding the mare & guiding the foal to the food service location is critical the first few hours because they get the colostrum that is their initial immune system. Interesting also to watch (& learn) as the intern & the foaling manager goes over the placenta to make sure it all came out (no part retained) & to make sure it is healthy. There is an infection that shows up inside the placenta that does not come from external. They are doing studies on this at the university of Ky equine diagnostic lab because they are trying to figure it out. First foal born this year had signs of it & it tested positive in the lab. Foal is fine but worse cases can cause problems. Learning so much from this job besides the initial signs of labor which I have definitely caught onto after observing the first couple of mares.

What a thrill to see those adorable foals & they are always curious & come up to sniff & get pets when I water & feed in the stalls.

After nights like last night, my adrenalin is still flowing when I get home at 5am. Even having one foal a night does that to me cause the excitement of the birth never ends

Wow, so many foals born since I last posted here. We had one that ended up having a c-section because the foal was basically stuck. Another one that was stuck also but lost that foal after hauling her to the vet hospital. We have had awesome foals born. One also had issues with its legs & they have amazing braces that are made especially for foals legs to correct difficult leg issues. So far we only have 13 mares left to foal between now & May. All the pregnant mares are now in the foaling barn along with 4 of the mares with foals. So I still get to have fun with the babies & get to know the rest of the mares.

My favorite mare who pins her ears back at everyone had her baby last week. She is very protective of her baby & we have had several conversations about not biting or kicking at me or blocking me from getting her feed bucket out of the stall when she is finished eating. She had the most handsome colt. The foal born last night gave me a chance to learn a little about "dummy foals". She was not as bad as some but required oxygen & vet care with antibiotics & IV vitamins & a DMSO mixture along with tubing its first pint of colostrum. What a learning experience that was but with that care, the foal was up & nursing on it's own (better than some of the others). Filly's seem to get the hang of nursing quicker than colts.

The foals are at such a fun stage. They interface with me every time I go into their stalls & love to chew on my jacket or sweatshirt sleeve & just love to explore. This job has been such an amazing learning experience & an amazing opportunity to learn so many different horse personalities & how to handle them. Lol....no 1200+ lb horse can intimidate me....no 200lb person can either
