After losing my horse Izzy at only 17 last september, I have felt lost without being around & caring for horses. I needed this time to recover though because her care the last 3 months of her life was exhausting & I lost my adopted doggie the week before I lost Izzy.

Anyway, some friends were working with foal watch & the mares & foals at the TB farm 2 minutes away from my farm & they recommended me for this position. I am thrilled & start Sunday night. They have 11 mares due before the end of Jan. So I get to dive right in. They have experienced, trained people to do the deliveries but get some hands on & wonderful chance to learn so much & be a part of each delivery then care for the mares & foals until the next group of mares are brought in. Get to feed, & spend time with the mares & foals. What a dream job...but so much learning I can gain from it also. Can't get a much closer job than 2 minutes away from home either.

The nice thing too is that I can enjoy the horses without all the vet bills. I will be paying off all my vet bills from Izzy for this whole year. Will I get another horse? I plan to but not until my own farm is set up for having one. It was hard hauling water & feed to another farm even though it was right next door. Just not like having them right on your own property. I have plans but that will take some time.

I had Izzy for the first 2 years of her life (from birth). Then I spent the next 13 years anticipating bringing her to my farm. I had her here for the last 2 years of her life. Not having her here without that anticipation of her coming leaves such an empty place in my heart. I am just thrilled to get to work around these wonderful mares & their foals & be a part of their birth. I also do farm sitting for a friend when they have to go away.

On the home front I have my kitty Gabe who showed up on my farm 2 1/2 years ago. He is a clown. I have never had a cat who interfaces with me like Gabe. He watches sunrises with me. He loves to play hide & seek & I pretend not to see him & while looking around, he comes bounding out of his hiding place & tackles my leg. This crazy little cat has totally won my heart & has helped me through my loss of Leo & Izzy.

I brought home a cat from the barn where I had Izzy. I called her Barn Kitty (BK). She would always greet me at the gate when I drove up in my truck. After unlocking the gate, she would escort my truck right to the barn. All I could see was her tail in front of my truck. I was feeding her in the barn while I was mowing up there but when I finished, I really didn't want to drive up to the barn every day to feed her. One of the last nights I was going to be up there she followed my truck to the gate when I was leaving. I told her if she jumped in my truck I would bring her to my farm & she would get food every day & in the house during the cold winter. To my surprise, she jumped right in my truck & rode happily down to my farm. At first I just let her stay outside & she would greet me every time & came home & jump in my truck when I opened the door. Weather got colder so I made a cozy place for her in my garage. We had snow & freezing weather so I let her in the house. Gabe wasn't happy about that so I have a huge room for her & let her out on warmer days. She is a sweetheart but Gabe owns the house & not interested in sharing....so this system is working for now.

I still have my wild raccoons I feed & they take food from my hands & I have 3 possums that visit for food though they have been hibernating in the cold weather along with the 4 chipmunks that stock up on bird seed. Can't imagine a life that isn't surrounded by animals, both pets & wild ones from my woods. My last eskie doggie JoGI is blind & has hip issues but is doing well for turning 16 this April. I have had him from birth also.

Thank you. I am a little nervous cause with 11 mares scheduled to foal 15 days
The rest are spread out over the next 3 months. But what an opportunity to learn & get so much more experiences with horses. I was surprised when my friends told me about the open position (I also know the lady who had it before) & then recommended me to the manager. Kinda nice going into an interview knowing they already want you & so close to home

Thank you. Know I will love working with these horses. Learning curves are always a challenge I enjoy too.

I love having the relationships I have with all my fur babies. They are all so special.

Eskie, I joke that dealing with someone else's critters is like being a grandparent. You get to have fun with them but get to go home at the end of the day.

It's been over 30 years since we were in the breeding business. I still miss having foals around each spring.

I so agree & I don't have the vet bills either. Ugh, will be paying off the vet Bill's for Izzy for the next 10 months (been paying them off for 2 months already). Those equine hospitals are wonderful but expensive.

I know, I miss having the puppies I bred too, but it is easier to visit than to have all the care of.

Still planning of getting another horse when I get my farm set up better & permanent fencing installed. Hot wire worked but....

There are 35 pregnant mares right now. They lost one foal last weekend. The 11 due in Jan. are mostly all maiden so they have no idea how they are going to react in foaling or with their foals. More experienced mares are due in the following months. This will possibly be the most challenging group but definitely a learning experience for me. Lol....they put red, yellow & green dots on the stalls for warning cause we also feed at 2am

First foaling happened on my watch Wed night. We were having a snow storm when it happened. I called the delivery team while getting the mare into the foaling stall. Missed the water breaking so on my check she was laying down with the bag & signs of 2 little legs coming out. Got her in the stall, got all the prep cart there. The team had icy, snowy roads to drive even 2 minutes away living on the farm. They arrived just seconds after she gave birth to a beautiful HUGE filly. Awesome learning experience on afterbirth care. We got her up & nursing before I left a couple of times but it was a struggle. Last night she was up & nursing on her own but have to hold the mare cause she is not the nicest mom. Will be interesting to see when the next ones come. Next due dates are the jan 23. I have a couple of days off. End of my week was early this morning

Nothing like the most inexperienced foaling person getting to handle the first foaling of the year. Actually good because it built up my confidence in being able to handle more than just watching
