Harmful Foods Your Cat Should Never Eat: Tuna, Milk, Raw Fish, and More

Some of these are surprising.

I knew all of them except raw egg, that’s because I volunteered at a shelter for a long time. I’m blessed cause my cat eats nothing except his cat food and likes licking my hands if I eat something salty.

I didn't know tuna could cause malnutrition. I was feeding my cat tuna every day for a while, but now it's just an occasional treat because I heard about the mercury issue.

I've also read garlic and onions are poisonous to cats, so I can't give him any of my food.

Wow, this is great information to have, not that I have a cat, but there’s a similarly long list of foods dogs can’t eat, either.
Had no idea tuna was bad for them, but I did know about cow’s milk.
If only I could show this to the cat that hangs out at work, and get him to stop trying to shove his head in my lunchbox

You're welcome, liz.

My Caroline is addicted to a treat called Temptations. I try not to give her too many, but she begs and gets mad when I don't oblige her. It isn't dangerous, but it's expensive!

Lol. I’ve all but given up on trying to stop mum from handing out the temptations! Sir has her wrapped around his paw. Fortunately he’s not overweight and does limit himself, but whenever he begs mum gives him treats.

I thought of this thread this morning when I gave Abby some milk. She will just about turn herself inside out begging when I get the milk out. I only give her a teeny bit and it makes her happy. It's never bothered her tummy.

When a friend of mine had her kittens spayed, i found a milk-like product at the supermarket called "Cat-Sip" for the convalescing little darlings. She said they refused water afterwards and only wanted their catsip.
Thanks for this!

Yeah I used to buy that. For the volunteer place I worked. I mainly worked in the sick ward where we nebulized cats, kittens and the occasional puppy. We volunteers bought a lot of stuff on our own to indices them to eat. The cat milk was for those not eating anything. It helped stimulate their appetite. Yogurt was another thing we used but only in small amounts. Though the shelter provided really high end food some of the cats were feral and used to none nutritious food. Our job was to get them eating so they could recover. We we a tight group and we loved our volunteer job. We did everything but stand on our heads to get them to eat. Playing soft music, hand feeding them. Offering them stinky fish.

Nammu, did I tell you I'm planning on volunteering at a local shelter after I retire?

No, you didn’t mention that. Is it a no kill shelter? That’s what the one I volunteered at was. That’s why we had a icu for the animals and nebulized them. It was great working with like minded people. I did that until my back got too bad. You’ll love it!

Yes, it's a no kill shelter. Actually I'm trying to decide between the county shelter or a private one.

Can you visit the areas where you’d be working to see if one is a better fit than the other?

This may be perverse of me but I hope they are both great.

I got Beeg from the county shelter. The old shelter was a horror. I was very impressed when I was there looking for a dog and got Beeg.

I don't think it's perverse to hope they are great. That would mean critters at both are in great places.
