Fourteen years is a good long time for a dog. She knew she was loved, and I believe somehow they know we've done the best we can by them.

I've had to make this decision. It's very, very hard, and feels so lonely.

But she's beyond the pain, now.

Gentlest hugggs......

It's kind of funny, my husband wanted a German shepherd because he had several as a kid and liked the breed. I was not so sure about a big dog because I had only had smaller ones. Then she showed up near his work as a puppy. He worked in a very rough neighborhood with lots of strays wandering around. He observed her for a while. He saw her almost hit by a car and she definitely did not seem to belong to anyone. There were no lost dog signs in the area. So, he called me. I went to the pharmacy and picked up a Frontline treatment and then to his work. We gave her that, put her in the cat carrier to take him home.

We weren't sure if we would keep her or rehome her initially. However, it turned out she had a case of mange. Her hair started to fall out and she had to go through a course of shots. By the time she was better, she was part of the family, so she stayed.

That picture was from she had just come from the groomer. Her hair was always straighter after a grooming. Otherwise it was kind of curly. She was obviously German shepherd mixed with something else. One of her groomers said probably with one of those longer-haired Belgian shepherds. I think Teruven, they are called.

The best dogs are the ones which make their way into our lives unexpectedly.

I love her adoption story

I've never seen a german shepherd with a "girl's" hairdo. Really beautiful.

So sorry for your loss.

She always looked so pretty when she came back from the groomer. It made more sense to send her to a professional because she had so much fur. If we bathed her at home, she seemed to never dry and even using a small hair dryer would take forever. She needed the special dryers at the vet clinic. Plus, they would brush her for about an hour before the bath so her fur was smooth and shiny.

I have a feeling we are going to be finding her fur around the house for another year at least.
