I can't believe there wasn't a single Pet forum board on here. You'd think there'd be one for ESA animals and what not because they seem pretty important to me, so I apologize if this is the wrong forum but I don't know where else to post.
That being said, I need the help of any vet who is a member on here. I have a 7 year old Chihuahua-Jack Russell mix that is about 18.9 pounds, and ever since the new puppy came home, she has started isolating. Well, now, her symptoms have expanded to include lethargy, occasional panting, loss of appetite, uninterested in treats or even water, but doesn't seem in pain. She doesn't wince, her eyes are clear and lucid. She has diarrhea, and her stool is dark brown and occasionally a little more to the reddish with spotting. She's been to the vet twice, first time to give her an anti-nausea injection and anti-diarrhea med, but she's not eating so that's not really helpful. Second time they gave her light sedation (because she gets a little anxiety-prone at the vet), subcutaneous fluids, and an anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea injection. Metronidazole was one of them. That was yesterday. The sedation has worn off and 24 hours later, Juno shows no change. The vet here (Star of Texas in Austin) is saying that they think it's some kind of viral gastroenteritis. The new puppy came down with Parvovirus, but the vet literally caught it during its incubation phase where the puppy was just starting to be symptomatic, and we treated him at home, and he's completely recovered. Juno was vaccinated against Parvo, and was tested for it, but it was negative. Today, she just started coughing. I don't have the money to pay for all the testing because there's a dozen things it could be. I am already living off my credit card because I lost my job on my day off, and I am already teetering on bankruptcy. Juno is my ESA dog, so bankruptcy is not entirely out of the question as far as I'm concerned. I am impulsive enough to say eff it and go whistling into abject poverty and endless bankruptcy court for her. Could it be something as simple as depression? I don't know. I obsess over everything so I am already drawing highly-questionable conclusions about her symptoms based on my extraordinarily limited knowledge, which is why I need expert help so I can narrow it down to the most likely suspect. Please help me. I cannot lose my doggo. My life is a house of cards. Juno is a structural piece of that. I love my vets, but I am panicking and need a bit more in-depth help. I am hoping someone on here is a vet willing to point me in the right direction. I know a CBC is probably in order ($200) and probably X-rays ($175), and they'll probably give her x medication ($100-200?), as well as a stool sample ($75) since they only tested for Parvo. I don't know how they check for heart worms (even though she's on meds for it) which means ($$$?). I'm drowning right now. and I cannot lost my best friend in the process. |

My heart goes out to you. I own 5 cats and my terror is not having the money if they need vet care. I have no credit cards (and no bank account, right now).
It's interesting (kind-of odd) that your pup has been checked out twice, but is still unwell. I know next to nothing about dogs - but there actually is a pet board here on the forum. You can find it under General Chat. I'm sure you will find input there. I will try to get your post moved for you. __________________ |

Go to the general social chat and there is a sub forum called “our pets”. You may get more support there but I doubt there are veterinarians that post there.
I’m sorry your dog is sick and it’s costing you so much. Veterinarians can definitely be extremely expensive. I am wondering if this new puppy is stressing your little dog out. Sometimes a dog doesn’t do well around other dogs. |

I am not a vet. But I am also wondering if it's psychosomatic from stress about the new puppy.
I have actually had GI issues from stress myself. |

Thank you all for your kind responses. I looked way down in the Social Chats area, too, but didn't think to look under General. Yeah, I doubt there's any vets on here, but I suppose they're just as prone as the rest of us to mental issues. Probably more so because that has to be a heartbreaking job at times.
And yes, I've considered the stress thing, and think it could be that, but how do I encourage her to eat, then? She's still my little alpha dog, and I got the puppy for her to hang out with. "For as you have done for the least of these, so have you done for Me." |

Actually, there used to be an active member who was a vet. Unfortunately, I haven't seen her around for a very long time. Also, the suicide rate among vets is extremely high. I can understand why, for many reasons.
Do either of you have any ideas @lizardlady or @Travelinglady? __________________ |

MSF has a program for grants to members. I don't know if vet bills would qualify, but you could check.
Maybe there is an ESA support group in your area that could help? It would merit investigating. Have you heard of the CARE credit card? It covers medical, dental and vet costs. Your vet might have an application you could fill out. You can also get information on line. Have you spoken to the vet about possible anxiety/depression. My vet prescribed Prozac for my dog's separatIon anxiety. 30 day script is $4 at Wally World. On the other had, does Juno have a temp? I'm not a vet, but to me a temp implies illness rather than stress. One last thought... is there a vet college anywhere near you? They have access to the latest info and can be a little less expensive. |

MSF?
I don't know anything about the ESA groups. I'm a bit of a recluse. I'll have to take a look. Same for the CARE credit card and the vet college. Depression is the one thing I haven't asked about. That is pretty cheap. Tonight she finally ate one bite of a treat. That was it. lmao It feels almost like she's mad at me about the puppy with the way she keeps looking at me. lol I don't know about the temp. On occasion she'll come out of the blankets and start panting. That's why I think something is physically wrong. But that will require a CBC. |

Another symptom. Loss of bowel function? She had diarrhea in her dog bed, and then ran outside and squatted some more. I was more surprised that there was anything left to come out. And hallelujah, it wasn't red or dark brown. More a light brown color.
I wasn't aware of any grants offered here on MSF. |

If you have been a a member here for more than a year, you can apply for the Community Fund. I can't find the page that explains it right now. Basically, you have to fill out an application explaining what you need the money for. The maximum amount is $500
I used Care credit for vet bills. However, if you don't have the means to pay it back, it will mean you end up with more debt. It is lower interest than regular credit cards though. |

Yeah, I'm already riding the red line between solvency and bankruptcy. She drank some water this morning, but still won't eat, so I don't know what is going on. I'm probably going to have to drop the $200 for a CBC.
EDIT: Also, had I known about the Community Credit thing, I probably would have donated to it by now. lol |

Unfortunately, I believe the PDSA is only for those across the pond. Thank you, though! 😊

I guess more than a few. Never even thought to look for this because I didn't realize such a thing existed.
