Recently I heard two stories of people fussing at their partner for "verbally abusing" pets be calling them names in a gushy, lovey tone of voice. Personally I believe the accusers are wrong. I do this to my fur babies. I might call one of my babies a "brat" while loving on them. The cats will be purring up a story when I do. I call BG a "goofy" boy when playing with him. Three of my cats are extra large. I might call them a chunky boy when I pick them up.

Let me be clear, I'm not talking about yelling at animals. I'm talking about using potentially "insulting" words said in a happy, playful tone of voice while petting the pet.

So, what do you think? Personally, I belive the people who claim it is abusive a) don't understand animals and b) have a misunderstanding of real abuse. My experience is that I can call a dog every kind of mean name I can think of, but if I say it in a positive tone while petting/playing with them they are happy.

Their vocabulary is limited and I believe they go by the tone and body language of the person talking to them. I see nothing wrong with it.

I agree Nammu. I think if you called a pet nice, sweet names in an angry voice they would be upset.

Yeah, I agree. And if you yet their names at them angrily I think they get confused and scared. I know cats are notorious for not coming when called but my guy does. But I don’t abuse his name and reserve calling him for when I really need him to come.

How is it animal abuse really. Are people saying animals can comprehend language in its full capacity? Please. As long as animal is treated well, how is it a problem. Cat isn’t going to develop disorder because he was called “chunky”.

divine calls me chunky all the time but she says it very sweetly so we are still friends

Then again, they have done studies where dogs know like a thousand words? They tell the dog to go get a certain toy and he does.

It makes other humans uncomfortable, not the pet.

I can also upset my cat by being overly happy and playful when he'd rather be quiet.

I agree about the pets just picking up on the tone of voice. That said, I'd be mad if someone used negative words and names in talking to my pets, even if they weren't upset. I'd sort of feel like I was being verbally abused! After all, they're my babies!

I think the issue discussed was talking like this to people’s own pets. Not other people’s pets. Like they said calling one’s cat “oh you my bratty chunky chunks” or something is supposedly animal abuse.

I’d say talking like this to other peoples pets would be bothersome. Not to pets but to pets owners.

I call my girl Tigger a piggy poo in a loving tone of voice (when shes being greedy and asking for food even when she is full)

She never has understood the sensation of having a full tummy, it stems back to before i got her from RSPCA, her previous human had way too many pets and couldnt look after them all and they all had to compete with each other all the time for food

I see nothing wrong with calling her that in a loving tone, when shes in "beg constantly for food even when i literally just this second finished eating a full pouch of food" mode

Cats understand some words, but not every single word. Try saying "trip to the vet" and see how long it takes for your cats to hide .....

Another example is Ebony would react to the word "police" whether it was writ down or said, she would get scared, poor little girl

Oh, if someone else did it I would be insulted too. I was talking about saying it to your own pet.

I make fun of my cat all the time in that baby-voice and he loves it. Purrs purrs purrs.

Yes, I got that. I was just making the contrast. I never call my own pets anything very negative, too. I know my cat recognizes some words. And my dog, too.

Ebonys boyfriend Tom would get offended at getting called anything that wasnt "Tom", i made the mistake of calling him darling and he got so offended (even though i used a lovey tone of voice) .....

No. Whether the pets know English or not doesn't matter , speak to them in loving ways not aggressive negative ways. It's like if you were speaking in abusive ways to a person who doesn't know your language - its still abuse. Be kind to animals. Give them love only.

True, i think love is something Tom only had in his first home, after his purrson died he got kicked out by the family, then he was in and out of rescue multiple times so that caused him to decide "i cant trust the humans any more", so he would put his worst side forward first, so he wasnt growing attached then getting rejected again, he did that with me when he ended up with me, i only had him for 3 months before
Possible trigger:
had to say goodbye to him as he was rushed off by the vet, never saw him again

The rescue *assumed* he had arthritis, it wasnt investigated until he came to me, Mum never forgave the rescue for that assumption

Yes I'm very sorry about that @willowtigger, what a time that must've been.🙏 Animals are just like people (we are animals) in the sense that the things they experience in life shape their responses to life. It's a difficult path but they learn too, one way or the other, that's very obvious. They have love in their hearts and that's precious.🙏

what i wish is that i could of actually held him at the end, so he could feel the love as he went, I could do that for Ebony but not Tom

He went in for xray, but as well as his spine they also said his kidneys were not doing well either, Ebony never recovered from never seeing him again, i still carry that guilt as well

Yes I feel for you @willowtigger. You're a very caring person. But please, regret not the past, that's something which is expressed all the time for good reason. Once the animals leave their bodies they're free. Free and happy. It's us who must learn to do things in better ways. For the world. I firmly believe that my friend.
