This article points out that some major animal charities spend more money paying the bigwigs than helping critters. I already knew the truth about the SPCA. Their CEO makes a fortune while only a pittance goes to the animals.

Please research the charities you donate to. I have two I donate to that over 80% of what they take in goes to the animals.

The fact that PETA has a shelter with an 80% KILL rate horrified, but did not surprise me. They always struck me as making a lot of show, but not actually doing anything to help animals.
