I'm having an issue with the new pooch I could use some help with. Apparently she was allowed on the furniture by previous owner. She will get on the bed or sofa to sleep. When I catch her I tell "bad dog" and to "get down". She gets down when told, but will sneak back up. Any suggestions? Should I do something differently? Do I just need to give her time to learn it's not okay behavior?

Cesar Millan had a show on this. The husband kept calling the dogs up on the bed, the wife was not happy about it, and the dogs were generally out of control yippy dogs.

Does she have her own confy bed(s)? I gotta tell you, i do not like to see big dogs lolling on nice couches like they paid for them! It just rubs me the wrong way! Not that i ever even had a dog. Btw, the other day i also declared Prince Louie to be a brat, not that i ever had a kid!

She is an older dog so it will probably take repeated training to get her to realize that furniture is a no no.

That’s all I got for you.

I allowed my car on furniture but not on counter tops in the kitchen and bathroom. He was 6 when I got him and it toook him a bit of time to learn that. Then when we came to mum’s house she said no to furniture. Took a while but I increased the number of his beds and placed them in prime sunshine spots. Now that mum’s gone he’s been getting up in her chair to nap, that’s ok with me. It’s the only chair he uses. I think he misses her.

Una, she has two comfy beds, one in living room, one in bedroom. She'll get on one of her beds if I make her get off the furniture. I'm not a big fan of Cesar Milan. He lies too much on punishment in his training.

Nammu, I had the same thought as you about Sir and your mom's chair. Sounds like he misses her. I'm impressed you trained your cats to stay off the counters.

I think I just need to continue to be patient and consistent about the pupper and furniture

I like Cesar because he very consistently blames the parents for the dog's issues. Very freudian!

Since she's a foodie, why don't you give her a treat for every time she gets off the furniture and for every time she gets onto her own bed?

Good idea Lark. I don't usually have a treat handy when it happens so I praise and pet her. Responds to it as much as treats.

UPDATE: she is staying off the sofa, but still gets on the bed. She's making progress with the bed. No more joining me at night. When I catch her on the bed she looks guilty like she knows she shouldn't be there. Gets down as soon as I tell her to get down.

I keep reminding myself she's only been here a week.

Awww, she’ll get there. She’ll understand you love her, even if it means no furniture. YOu got to undo years of her thinking it’s ok to be on furniture. My dog I grew up with wasn’t allowed on furniture either. What was really hard for her and me was that she wasn’t allowed in the bedrooms. She knew mum was boss. But when mum got very sick she snuck into mum’s room and laid at the foot of the bed on the floor. She didn’t eat until mum recovered.

Aww, this is cute. Dogs sound better at learning than some humans!
