Hi everyone

My cat passed away last May. He was my world. He just dropped dead in front of myself and my daughter. I keep having flashbacks from that awful day

I want to get another cat but I feel like I would be replacing him and also I can’t seem to move on. He was so affectionate and I miss him so much.

So sorry for your loss. I don't really have any advice as I've recently lost my dog and I know how hard it is. I don't think getting another cat would ever replace him. Try to think of it as just welcoming in a new member of the family.

Aw, I'm very sorry for your loss LilyRosex. I love cats too. It would be good to get a new cat, a new addition to the family, because the cats want a loving caring place to be as well.🐈🙏

Thank you both.

I do want to get another cat. Maybe I should make an appointment at the shelter. I know there are loads of cats that need loving homes. I just feel guilty in getting another one.

I lost my soulmate doggie Leo just before Christmas 2018. My heart was never so broken in my life (there is still a hole there that will never be filled). I also had his older sister & younger brother & 6 months after that my horse trainer shipped my horse across the country to my farm. I was still surrounded by my special fur babies but that soulmate special relationship really hurtto be missing from my life.

Go figure, one day I was outside & this little thing went bounding out from under my truck to under my horse trailer. Thought it was a baby raccoon. Walked toward tge trailer & out bounded a little kitten, climbed my muck boot & my leg & landed in my arms. I seriously was not ready for another pet & definitely NOT a cat but he wouldn't let me say no. He stayed & he is the most amazing soulmate kitty I have ever had. He did not take Leo's place as my soulmate but he sure made his own special soulmate place in my heart. 4 years later & I have a very special love bond between us that I never imagined could ever exist. Each one of my fur babies owns a special piece of my heart. I lost my other dogs to old age & my horse to serious health problems. My soulmate kitty helped my heart through those following years & losses because he always sensed when my heart was hurting.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Pet loss is so very hard.

When my cat died a long time ago my vet's office gave me a book about pet grief. It was surprisingly helpful. One of the things it said was to take your time and you would know when you were ready to have another pet. You'd never replace the prior one, just develop a new relationship with a pet. It suggested when you felt you might be ready visiting the shelter and really paying attention to how you felt. I followed this advice and it really worked for me. I wasn't sure at all when I walked in but very quickly became attached to not just one but 2 kittens who I wound up taking home and loving through their entire lives. They were exactly the right cats for me.

In the more recent past I had a brother/sister pair. The boy had a lot of health problems and died when he was 3. I never even considered getting another cat even though I think they usually are better off in pairs. My Abbycat is much happier as a single girl and is the best cat I've ever had. That was another case of listening to how I felt in my grief and acting on those feelings.

You'll know when you are ready. Don't push it until then. There was just the cutest dog featured on the local dog shelter. Someone had adopted him, kept him 2 days and realized they weren't done grieving for their previous pet yet and returned him. That's obviously no good for anyone.

Keep posting here if it helps. We all love pets and many of us having been through losses.

LilyRose, am going to echo what was said before. Listen to your heart. You will know when it is time. Do what is right for you.
