My little Izzy is hurt
I was just giving her some food and water and she was running around me and leapt up onto my lap, I stroked her but noticed pink on her back (she is a lionhead so has lots of fur/hair?). When I looked closer there were cuts and scratches along her spine and the skin looked quite sore around them and clumps of hair missing ... I'm unsure of wether a cat's got to her or not (she is only tiny at the moment). Anyway, I boiled some water and let it cool so it wasn't too hot and bathed her cuts just to get any possible dirt away, they look quite clean. I've just got to keep an eye on them for a while, see if they heal ok and don't get infected or anything. She's eating and drinking properly and still playing so they can't be bothering her too much. I think I'm probably more upset than she is, my poor little Izzy!

I'm sorry! I freak out the same way when my babies are hurt - it always seem we take it worse than they do sometimes!

Could it be that she's scratching herself at all? I own rats... when one of my boys had patches of bare skin and scratches I took him to the vet to get tested for mites ... or perhaps it could be an allergy or something else?

If the cuts are bleeding though, you can use Neosporin on them...

I hope they heal up!

so sorry Izzy is hurt. if she's eating and drinking ok, that's a good sign.

i see Christina has offered the neosporin solution already.

i use it on all of my critters.

let us know how she's doing......

I think even though she's cute and fuzzy she must be tough too so she'll be okay

thanks guys... and yeh she's a fighter kaika
thanks for mentioning neopsporin, I'll see if I can find some (don't know if we have it in UK). I was unsure about putting anything other than water on them because I didn't know if any human antiseptics would irritate or harm her, so thanks.

I'll let you know how she gets on,
Molly

Hi Molly
we have a dog that just keeps ripping his fur out all over his chest and tail, and the vet gave us some pills and some cream for his skin ( we owned his aunt and she lived to be a old dog but I digest Bandits biggest trouble is mites as already stated above So there is a cream for animals and Bandit is on Prednisalone 20mg tabs for internal. Either way , hope that helped

Thanks
I don't think it's mites... some of the cuts are small, like bite marks and the ones lower down are long and look like scratches. I don't think it's possible for her to have done it either, she can't reach the very top ones.
But, anyhow, thank you.
Molly

might i suggest a phone call to your local vet? Even with out visiting, they can probably advise you what to do to keep them clean and promote healing.

And another good thing to do is salt water baths.. just mix a teaspoon of salt into about a cup of water. Use that to bathe the wounds and it should help it heal up.
Thanks for this!

I have heard from my mom that rabbit skin cures very fast. I hope it is the same for your small tiny rabbi.

Some of her cuts are healing quickly already, but I think they're hurting her a bit now as they're healing... some keep breaking open as she moves and she gets quite jumpy if you go near her back.

Can you make her a shirt, something like a sweater that keeps her partly immobilized until she heals up?

So..... Izzy's cuts have pretty much healed up, the scabs are just a bit flakey. Not worried about that. But, I am concerned of the blue mark that's appeared on her back. I was thinking that it may be a bruise from where her fur got pulled out (but I only noticed it tonight, definitely wasn't there this morning or when I discovered the cuts)... anyway.. do any of you think that that's all it is? A delayed bruise?
I took some pics...

Hi Rabbit Lady

It looks like delayed bruising. But if little Izzy is in discomfort I would take her to the Vet.

Take Care,

Izzy is fine the bruise has turned out not to be a bruise, I think.. it's just her hair growing back through... fur
(((((((((( Izzy )))))))))) aww I love her to bits. She's still a menace though

We were about to suggest that it was the new fur growing in.
Rabbits have ticked fur, like the cats we breed, & initial regrowth of hair can often show this effect in animals with ticked coats.
