anyone have experiences of this? like getting a cat from a shelter, from a friend etc?

i have a 3 year old female in mind. i'm worried she won't bond with me (eventually of course.. doesn't have to be 1 day, 1 week or even 1 month).. i have had cats but i raised them from kittens to adults.

any advice and/or reassurance is appreciated.

IMO - cats seem to adjust rather quickly to new people..... just make sue that you do not take home a cat that is already temperamental to start with.

Good Luck.

Twilight,

My husband and I have adopted two older cats -- one female and one male. They turned out to be very loving animals.

Hi,
I agree with Rhapsody. Interact with the cat before you take it home. Ask the caregiver about it's personality and history , if any. I had cats before that were 3 yrs. old and they bonded very fast. Good luck.

I adopted a 9-month-old tabby who was a stray. He was kind of wild at first, but very smart and playful. We have bonded while playing and he even feels okay to sit on my lap--ONLY when I am on the computer, of course , and he will sit beside me on the couch--particularly if I have some food that smells good, even though he doesn't want any ??

This week I am packing and moving and he is sticking closer to me. I feel bad for upsetting his world and I reassure him, but I think that also shows the bonding is there.

I think cats need to bond and so it will happen. I hope you'll let us know what you decide and how it goes.

I haven't had the experience but I've talked to some people who have adopted animals... they all say they're very loving. I hope this one works out for you =D

Tyger is an older cat. I'm not sure how old he is but he adopted me. He found me. He just started to hang around my apartment and I kept telling him go away I can't afford to have you. Dad says no cats. But he melted my heart and the next thing I knew I was paying the pet deposit on my apartment LOL. He and I have a very strong bond.

I have a male black long haired cat that I adopted a few weeks ago. He is doing well with me even though he's not a kitten I found that he is very calm and well mannered. I brought him to the vet's today for neuturing since I feel it's good for his peace and mind (and mine as well). It was suggested to me by the rescuer (who gave me a certificate for low cost neuturing). I found in the past that males cat are better companions than female cats and this young male proves the same.

He has been crying alot (at night) this past few days. I feel he wants to mate so I'm glad I made the appointment for him today and he will also get his booster shots for feline leukemia as well.

I love that he is a grown cat since at my age (53) a kitten would be like raising a baby. My baby days are over (I'm a grandmother now).

So I recommend an older cat if you find that you aren't compatible at first give it a try it might just be the pet you've been hoping for. Good luck!!
