Did you know that you could do the Heimlich Manuever on your dog if they are chocking... depending on their size?

When my cat, Idgie, was about 6 months old, I performed the Heimlich maneuver on her - well sort of. Bad form, but I got the job done!

Whenever the dry food bowl would get low on food, she would start eating the dry dog food. Well, she's full grown now and only weighs 10 pounds so you can imagine what a little purr-kid she was at 6 months!

The dogs were Golden Retrievers, so the dog food pieces were large bites. My partner called me into the kitchen with that "tone" of voice that makes you stop whatever you're doing! I go flying in there, and I knew immediately that Idgie was choking on a piece of kibble. It was bizarre, I will never forget the look on that cat's face. Her pupils were totally dilated - just huge black bulging marbles coming out of her head. And she was clawing desperately at her throat! Blood was starting to ooze from her neck.

I don't remember thinking anything, I just swooped her up and grabbed her hind legs between my fingers. I positioned her somehow between my legs and squeezed her gut area with my knees. Nothing happened. Her eyes were so huge and there was no mistaking that she was dying.

Still holding her by the legs, I whipped this cat up over my shoulder and slammed her belly against my knee. The chunk of dog food went flying out of her mouth landing a good 8 feet away! Idgie took off like a crazed cat. She wouldn't come near me for a good 3 days!

My sister did the heimlich on our black lab Cindy. I don't remember what she was choking on but my sister grabbed her around her belly and out popped whatever she was choking on.
