Hello everyone,

I'm Christina, one of the co-administrators here at PsychCentral, and I'm also the moderator of the Eating Disorders forum.

I wanted people to be aware of the new rules for this forum, which you may see as a notice at the top of the page by DocJohn:

This is because discussion of numbers is a very triggering topic and we want this to be a safe place for people to discuss their eating disorder and get support.

I also want to remind everyone here about the tools we can use to take care of ourselves when we're triggered or in a bad emotional spot.

One tool we have at our disposal is the "Ignore" button. You can use this when you don't want to be contacted by other specific members here. They won't be able to PM you, and you won't be able to see their posts.You can also not read or reply to other members here if you're not able to. We do not have to support people all of the time, and it's perfectly okay to take a step back and to ask for support for ourselves (without having to feel guilty about not supporting others).

From my experiences with eating disorders, I know that it is extremely difficult to deal with. I also know that we can have our good days, and our bad days. However, PsychCentral is *not* a pro-eating disorders support community. You should not be encouraging other members in their eating disorders to become worse, nor should you be giving advice about how to avoid eating or how to develop an eating disorder. We are here to support others in trying to live with an E.D. and those trying to recover.

I'm also asking members here to use the "trigger icon" (this one: Overeating & Binge Eating - Welcome!) when we are posting triggering material. This includes graphic descriptions of binging, or any other topic that we would consider triggering.

I still want people to feel secure to post here about their struggles, but please keep these things in mind.

I also ask you to send me a PM (private message) if you see anything here or anywhere on the forums that you think might be against the Community Guidelines or if you ever want someone to chat with, or ever have any other questions or concerns. Myself, and the other members of the Community Team are here to help!

Christina,

Thank you for the post. Graphic descriptions of binging is a clear trigger - understood. The prohibition of numbers - will also respect that. Can you list other topics or content type that would merit the icon of TRIGGER next to a post?

Well, in general a trigger icon is a good idea if:

- You're discussing thoughts of harming yourself, or self injury
- You're discussing abuse or abusive situations

- You're discussing something that you, yourself, would find triggering - but basically it's stuff that might cause someone else to be very triggered. Granted we cannot account for everyone's triggers (like if someone was triggered by "blue" for instance) but we can account for the most common ones.

When in doubt, you can add a trigger icon. Otherwise if you don't think a post warrants a trigger icon, don't put one on. If we get a request to put one on, we'll do it, or if I come across a post that I think might need one, I put one on. (I never remove a trigger icon from a post because if a member puts one on I've decided they think it needs one).

Hi everyone. Really glad I found this place- sometimes I need a place to just talk about how Im feeling about my eating problem and to have people understand me who may be going through the same thing. I'm really looking forward to using this!

Hi Christina,

I am new to this site and I wrote a tread yesterday and I can't seem to find it for replies. So my question is to you is my tread erased?

Isn’t the key to eating issues about keeping things in yr life balanced?
The times I have my wt under control are when my life works. I have a job that fits, a good friend, enjoyable leisure time, a pet to nurture, and minimal toxic influences. ESP w bipolar mixed w rapid cycling and gad, maintaining balance is vital and I really work at it.

Hi everyone

I’ve just joined. Like the name raging vortex - sums up how I feel when I’m binge eating.
I’ve been bingeing on and off over the last 40 years. You’d think by now I’d have sorted it out. Anyway, binge eating the last three years due to stress and after pigging our yesterday I looked to see if there was an online support forum. And here I am. I’ve been listening to hypnosis at night for help but it’s not working. I guess overeating and binge eating have different backgrounds. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with bingeing? When you have your mind set on pigging out it is very hard to change your mindset. I always think right I’ll stuff my face tonight and tomorrow I’ll be good. Next day I feel sick and bloated and only thing that helps is eating again.

Thanks for the welcome and I hope this site helps me to find out why I overeat and binge. If I know why I do it then I can find a way to stop it. My mother and brother both passed away from complications associated with obesity so I want to find out how to end the cycle of obesity and early death in the family. Before coming to the site I hadn't thought to get therapy for obesity...I have major depression and see the psychiatrist regularly but my weight was not mentioned in all these years they took my weight every office visit but still didn't discuss anything about my weight. I brought up the fact the meds are causing me to gain more weight and all the doctor did was agree the meds will do that. I'm at my wit's end because I prefer to be as close to my idea of perfect as can be not fat. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks again.
