Hi, I've had this problem for a long time where I either stay up all night in the kitchen, or I'll wake up in the middle of the night and binge eat. It seems like I've tried everything, and I still have this strong addiction that seems impossible to break.
It sounds completely insane, (probably because I am), but I've been through everything from locking the cupboards at night, to in-patient eating disorder centers -and I still have this terrible habit. I've had counselors, and tried eating more food during the day, but night time hunger doesn't seem to be the problem. I'll eat even when I'm not hungry at all. Usually the times when I struggle most with NES is anywhere around 9 pm to 3 am. It sounds weird, but I was wondering if anyone would be willing to call/text me sometime every night just to remind me to stay out of the kitchen. It might help just to have someone to keep accountable to just for support. Any feedback would be appreciated! |

I do this. I gained forty pounds because of this. I managed to lose it all but since then I've gained five lbs of it back from doing it again.
Question: do you exercise? This may or may not help... when I was on a good exercise routine I was too tired to eat in the evenings. I don't really exercise anymore so I started again. ![]()

I do this AND I have had 2 weight loss surgeries to boot. Times of excessive stress I just eat and eat. I used to purge but since surgery #1 I can't. I lost 160 pounds and had it under control but then life fell apart a lot and I gained a lot back. 2nd surgery not helping with the NES. Dealing with so much else psychiatric at this point, I don't know what to address first. I just wish there was a better answer for this one. It ses like even the docs and pdocs just say 'stop eating' like somehow, it's that easy. Is it????

I wanted to add to this night eating thread. From the research I've done, night eating is different from "sleep eating", which seems to be what I do from what I've read. I get up, and in a semi-hypnotic state, find food that is only carbs or sweet, eat it, often bringing it to bed with me, then in the morning finding candy wrappers, half cookies or half bagels next to me. I totally associate it with when I went on the sleep drugs that are hypnotics -- lunesta and ambien. (I also take klonapin at night and I think it all got worse when I began the second drug as well.) Lately I've been trying very hard to take herbal sleep meds instead of any of the hypnotics and my sleep eating improves. However, I have sleep-eaten for years, and like I said before, if a licensed hypnotist has had no luck whatsoever stopping it, all I can do is to try to give up lunesta and ambien completely, but which might mean I don't ever get decent sleep. Sigh.
BTW, I exercise hard almost every day, I get up early, I never nap, and my only bad habit is coffee, but I cut that off after 4 pm. |

I have done this for years and gained a lot of weight. I wish I knew the answer. Sometimes if I eat a bowl of cereal or something similar before bed, I can make it through the night without getting up and eating......I am so sick of waking up and finding food, wrappers, etc... in my bed.....
