Hello,
I’m new here, I thought I’d give this a try. I’ve been struggling with compulsive eating for a year now, however I have IBS and a past of SIBO so I get a lot of chronic pain and fatigue from any overeating. I’m seeing a psychologist every 3 weeks but if anything the overeating has worsened. I’m gaining weight and feel incredibly stressed, yet I’m addicted to eating. I used to have PICA as a child and I recently overcame that. *possible trigger* Part of this was bought on by my grandmother, who couldn’t deal with me feeling sad and would just keep feeding me instead. I used to stay with her a lot as my parents were away for work. I was also bullied throughout school which contributed to this, but I feel at peace with that now. However I still physically can’t stop the overeating. I’ve always been a healthy eater overall, we make food at home from scratch and eat mostly vegetables, whole grains, soy products, fruits and starchy vegetables. Since the overeating began I’ve found myself eating vast quantities of peanut butter (although I’m allergic), oats, homemade cereal, nuts, maple syrup, soy milk, wheat products (I’m intolerant to) and sometimes raw sugar. I don’t enjoy these things I just feel addicted to them and crave them, despite feeling so sick afterwards. I’ve never been overweight, my bmi has ranged from 17 to 20. But I’m gaining weight and I feel terrible. Does anyone have any similar experiences? How do you cope? What helps you stop? Love and light to you all x |

Hi SoftGrey . Welcome to Psych Central. I am sorry you feel compelled to eat.
I was always hungry when I was on a high carb low protein diet. I was given a diet for Hypoglycemia which was high protein and low carb. My appetite lessened over time. What I think was happening was my body was over producing insulin when I ate big carb meals and lowered my blood sugar so I was always hungry. I now eat foods like tofu (soy curd), scrambled egg white (high in protein), yogurt and or milk. For sweetening I use a banana instead of maple syrup or sugar. I experimented with high protein diet where I had low carb snack or meal every 3 hours and it really helped me feel more energetic and less hungry. Carbs tend to be a way that people gain weight although peanut butter, sweetened cereals and other high calorie foods can make maintaining present weight challenging. Thank you for your reply I actually just tried going low carb for a month and my compulsive eating got worse, so I’ve just decided to stop. I have food allergies and always crave those foods, so I’m getting some tests done to check if there are others I’m missing. I have had digestive issues since I was a child so I wonder if it’s linked |

Hey,
So I have the exact same problems with food. I rarely eat because am hungry but eat because am stressed or just to feel nothing. It has become such a reflex to eat to make myself feel better that I don't know what to do. Am not overweight but I am gaining a little weight because I always eat when am not feeling well. Have you food a way to solve your problem because I desperately need help. |
