Does anyone else on here feel like being fat is their identity? Because I think that’s part of my problem here; for so long, I’ve been told I’m a fat person and therefore a slew of other adjectives— bad, lazy, dumb, undisciplined, etc. Doctors, nurses, laypeople, my family… lots of different people have said it in one way or another. Then when I lost a **** ton of weight several years ago, everyone literally did a 180 on me and told me I was incredible, an inspiration, so much better than I used to be… no joke. I kid you not when I say that it really, really ****ed me up. I don’t want to be someone those types of people admire— snotty, rude, insulting, shallow, mean… and for the life of me, I can’t seem to separate all those adjectives from “thin and healthy.” I think it’s a major part of the issue with me, and I was curious if anyone else on here has identity issues regarding their weight. Any thoughts?

Please don't internalize the adjectives people throw at you. They don't define the real you.And moreover you acknowledged your own issues and acted to solve it.You are a way better person than all those who send the slew of negative adjectives your way.

It’s hard not to internalize those comments when not only did I hear them when I was fat, but that I stopped hearing them when I was thin. People are such assholes— they needed to mind their own business and see me for who I was regardless of my size, but they didn’t. I’m not stupid— did they think I wouldn’t get it? Did they really think I would forget all the horrible things they had said to me before? The answer is probably that they didn’t think at all. Like i said, people are assholes.
