Are there any specific meds to treat narcissism? My husb has a diagnosis of depression but after reading some info & posts here I'm wondering if he narcissistic instead. He's on a daily dose 450 mg Effexor + Abilify, which had been working pretty well up until the last few weeks.

Hi there My husband is a narcissist as per my previous post called "Wrath of Narcissism". He also suffers from depression in relation to the narcissism but takes no medication. To the best of my knowledge there are no medications to treat narcissism. In fact there is very little treatment at all because narcissists typically believe that nothing is wrong with them .... it's everyone else that has a problem. On the rare occasion that a narc ends up in a psychiatrists chair they are a nightmare to treat because they rant and argue continuously. I have found that the best way to handle my H and reduce the narcissism to a tolerable level is to not say things that would typically trigger a rage (e.g. anything which infers that he is not as great as he thinks) and not to buy into an arguement (e.g. just zip the mouth and don't respond). Doing this is like preventative treatment and does work to some degree although it is difficult to do. Life with a narcissist is not fun. All the best xx
Thanks for this!

After reading more on this forum & other places I'm thinking my husb is the Heinz 57 of psych patients. A friend & I discussed Borderline Personality Disorder & he fits a lot of the traits with that as well. I guess he doesn't have to be text-book one specific diagnosis.

I always say depression is very self-centered. Either everything's against you or everything bad is because of you. That's how husb is at least, but I think there's more to it than a 'simple' case of depression. I just wish the therapist & his psychiatrist would see that. His last therapist was really not any help but he seemed to like her. The big problem I'm finally realizing is that his doctors see the person he wants them to see; this nice mellow sad guy who's family is unsupportive & unsympathetic. They don't see the anger or bullying. That's gonna take involvement from me - which is my next approach: to set up an appt for ME to see a therapist/counselor. Then hopefully I can get husb to go with me at some point (early in the relationship). Hoping & praying I can pull that off!
