I have a 11 yo daughter and 8 yo son. My daughter has anxiety and has been absent from school a lot...almost 3 months. She is seeing a counselor now, and aim is to attend afternoons for next 2 weeks. She did this Monday and Tuesday but couldn't make it in today. I am just looking for some moral support as I feel so sad for her. I think she is beginning to get anxious about going places, and just wants to stay at home. I work at her school and drive home during my lunch break to bring her into school. I feel like I have no one to talk to. Thanks.

Hi, moosebug, and welcome to Psych Central! I'm sure that must be tough.

Have you considered the possibility of home schooling or is that out of the picture? Maybe that would take some pressure off of her as she is getting help for her anxiety.

Meanwhile, feel free to continue to post your feelings on this thread, and we will try to support you. I'm sure this situation isn't easy.

You might want to also do some reading in the Anxiety forum here.

My daughter would cry and cry when I woke her up for school. Finally, I homeschooled her, and she was better. I had to quit my job, and as a singe mother that was very hard. She is now in her 20s, moved to San Fran, and hasn't spoken to me in 3 years. She's happy, tho.

Hope all things good for you and your daughter.

I know the feeling and I can totally empathize with you! Our DD is currently in school, half days as well taking just her CORE classes. Its a shame because she is academically gifted and very musically and athletically talented. She should be in band or chorus and on the softball team, and it breaks my heart. I think what breaks my heart the most though is that these should be the best years of her life and they aren't! She is not happy in school. We tried online, but its not for her and she realizes that. Our daughter's anxiety also started when she was about 11 years old. She is currently in therapy and was just recently diagnosed with bipolar. The new meds have helped her become much more stable and I am hoping and praying that will transfer over to her social anxiety issues at school. Has your DD also seen a psychiatrist? Not necessarily of course, but there could be more going on than anxiety.
and from a fellow mom who understands!
