Hello everyone,
I am here because I support an adult with Autism and have some questions . The lady I support has been fixating on removing her shoes and socks repeatedly. So much so we can't do anything during the day as she is so focused on her shoes and socks. This is not something she usually will focus on so intensely. She wears the same shoes and socks she has had for a while now. I'm not sure how to help her, or if she even needs help to get through this? She has very limited vocabulary so she is unable to tell me if anything may be bothering her. At first I thought her shoes and socks were bugging her but her mom said she has had them for months. Her mom is even perplexed by this recent change in her usual behaviour. Usually she likes to get out and go for walks but now all she wants to do is adjust her footwear. How can I best support her other than letting her know that I am here for her? Cheers, Awena |

Awena,
This is probably a daft idea, but could it be something as simple as the socks/shoes are irritating her feet? Allergic reaction, perhaps? Maybe her feet are sore? I'm just wondering if it could be something physical as opposed to psychological. I know zero about autism, really, ... just thought I'd give a random suggestion. Hopefully someone else can come up with something better. xD

Could I suggest getting out and leaving a fresh set of socks/ shoes out so she can get them if she wants?
I too know little about autism, my son has aspergers so he as he was growing i know he had some pretty strange habits...especially around touvhing his head - nearly all of which he grew out of or changed over time. Id suggest letting her leave them off, giving her option new ones by leaving new out or even dr appointment just to check all ok if she seems distressed. I can relate to the frustration of not knowing what to do / not understanding. ...but given enough prompts if it's not causing distress then I would let her do what makes her happy atm. All the best....and well done...you have a rewarding but emotionally challenging job for sure Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk

Take her to a shoe store.
If these are the only shoes she wears, they may be getting worn and not as comfortable, as Z suggests. |
