Our 14 y/o was recently diagnosed with bipolar and is pretty stable now on Lithium and Abilify. She is also in therapy and has been for almost 3 years. One of the most frustrating symptoms, which is still going on, is her constant what SEEMS like, desire to always be ill or injured. A banner week for her is one in which she seems her therapist, her orthodontist and our chiropractor or whatever combination you can imagine! She seems to desperately want to have some type, any type really, of surgery. Has anyone else dealt with this type of issue with your loved one who has a mental illness? Advice?

She does have some social anxiety and I am sure school plays a part, but she constantly wants doctor's appointments and after school is fine with her. She played softball on both rec and travel teams from the time she was 4 until just a few months ago. She is amazing player, but she was constantly getting hurt - to the point where the parents and kids were noticing that it was so often for her. It happens in the summer too, so no, not just school related.

Hmm. What does the doc say? Could her meds be making her less aware?
![]() I am bipolar, but I don't think I am more physically ill than if I weren't. But I am very, very careful. |

Thanks! She has been this way for about 3 years, and she was just diagnosed and medicated starting about 3 months ago, so no, I am sure its not the meds. She is in therapy with a great therapist who has an amazing reputation in our community and he knows this, but nothing seems to be working, yet. Her pediatrician noticed at our last visit that she had been in quite a bit more than the average 14 year old. I am thinking maybe its an attention thing?

I wouldn't associated it with bipolar specifically - I have bipolar and I'm certainly not ill or injured more than others.
But perhaps it's a desire to have something physically "wrong" to cling to instead of accepting that there's a mental disorder present? Like... even before she was diagnosed, she likely was aware that something was "different"... and it's a lot easier to have something physical to blame as opposed to something in our brains. Or it could be an attention thing like you suggested.

Red Panda, that makes total sense! I am going to mention the possibility to her therapist! I had not thought of that. Thanks!
