Summary of conversation with an out of state brother that I am trying to help – any help would be appreciated.
Diagnosed with bipolar. Have tried most all medications available including some clinical trial drugs. Clinical trial forced me to gain 40 lbs. I cannot live like that. Currently on Lamictol but have difficulty staying on it. Things build up. After a period of time, I self-medicate with alcohol and Pot. I was doing good for about 3 months and then things built up and I went binge drinking. Now forced to try to find section 8 housing. Elderly mom cannot handle my mood swings. I have these voices in my head that are keeping my up at night. I have not slept in months. I cannot stop the voices. They tell me what to do. When I feel like I am making progress, the voices tell me to do other things. My logic suggests that he needs get rid of the voices. I have not yet spoken to his doctor but hope to. |

I see that 28 folks have viewed this but not replies? is this a different type of case/issue than the norm. Will I be able to talk to his doctor? will meds cure the voices or is this a totally different issue?

Hello, lefty14, and welcome to Psych Central! Is he not willing to tell his psychiatrist about the voices? Sounds like he might have Bipolar I, which can include psychotic episodes. He will need a medication for that as well as whatever else he is taking.
Will the doctor listen to you? ![]() |

If he has tried most of the meds available for bipolar then he will have already tried antipsychotics which should have taken care of the voices---30% of people don't respond to meds it may be that he is one of them....probably why he joined a clinical trial----you don't typically do that unless your meds aren't working. Everyone likes to think that you take your meds and everything gets better but it's not always like that...not everyone is so lucky.
You can talk to his doctor but the doctor can't talk to you by default----I'm not sure what you could add though as I expect your brother is already being honest with his pdoc but simply is non-responsive to meds...

I'm sorry I just saw this.
Do call his dr. If he has a therapist call him/her. Tell them you just wanted to make them aware that (brother name) is self medicating a possible psychotic episode and is about to be homeless. Then look up the local Mental health clinics and ask about housing services. look up the local churches social services programs see what they can offer, and community action programs. Then look at the public housing. Look into a monthly rate at a motel or the possibility of him moving in with you.

My oldest daughter has Bipolar I. She has been on and off several different medications over the years. She has a history of hearing voices too. In my experience, finding a good psychiatrist who is willing to spend the time has been helpful. Abilify has helped my daughter. Also, finding a support group can help. Hope you find the help you need!
