My neice is 9 years old and anyway she is having trouble at school with a classmate that does not like her and so anyway on Thursday she was at school and she started to cut herself right in the classroom and she wrote on her arm I am so stupid in black ink. I think she needs help professionally but her parents say no she is fine what I worry about is with her only being 9 this could get worse. I tried talking with them but they will not listen to me. I am afraid for this little girl. Her regular teacher saw it and my neice said she looked like she was going to cry but then the student teacher saw it and she told her your only stupid when you sit their and do nothing well that infuriated me I told my neice you are never stupid you just dont always make the right choice but not because your stupid you are not stupid and that was wrong for that teacher to say. I told her that it made me sad to see that she is in so much pain inside that she would have to hurt herself to feel better. But any suggestions on this would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you,
Angela

i'm sorry that your post hasn't been answered quicker. i'd have a talk with the principal and i'd also let the mother know that you know that the child needs some help. SI (self-injury) is a serious reaction to being hurt inside. as you know.........step up and work on getting her the help she needs. do your research and print it out and give it to her mom. keep me posted on how it goes and give that little girl a big hug from me and my beasties.......xoxoxo pat

Partial Custody of my neice and a problem she is having what do I do

I hope you get the parents to take action and seek counseling for your niece.

Hopefully the school can sort out if there's bullying involved against your niece--I think there's been a lot in the last 10 years that proves physical and verbal harassment against children in school has to be nipped in the bud. In my daughter's school last year, it got so bad for one little girl, and the school was not responsive, so the mother took legal action and it was resolved.

That is so depressing! SI-ing is really serious. If you start out young, it can lead to worse things once she thinks of them or she learns what they are. But at 9 years old, I think that's really bad. Maybe if the mother believes she's fine, I think you should take action yourself. Maybe try calling the school nurse? Maybe she could give you advise or her opinion. I also know as a child, if your hurt you will cry over a paper-cut, or just little things because they haven't grown up yet.

If she knows cutting herself will hurt, and she doesn't want to feel it then why would she? So, she obviously wants to feel the pain then. Try looking some information up online and if you can try finding some websites that talk about it, but here's one I found: http://www.kellybear.com/TeacherArti...cherTip44.html

also, this may help:

if you need anything, feel free to PM me anytime. good luck!
