I posted this here because the magical thinking must be part of a personality disorder and I am not a partner, but a daughter.

This is a way too long story, so I'll just start at the current moment.

Mom says her health issues are due to her being cursed.

Now, her cursed theory goes way back to her deciding that my grandfather (my father's father) was cursed for doing evil things to many people. He did. He was a ruthless sociopath.

I haven't notice anybody on here talking about magical thinking, but I thought I'd broach this important part of what contributes to my off thinking.

I am uncertain that being cursed has any basis in science, but that of course if your mother's problem not yours. It is her life, she can do what she likes with it. I don't think you have to agree with or collude in her beliefs. Are you a young person? Can you keep some distance if her thoughts get you down?

Yes, I'm 50 years young

They talk about magical thinking with personality disorders (BPD). I'm not sure exactly what they mean.

I was raised with superstitions, it's part of my culture.

I think my mother decided there must be a curse to try to explain all the tragedy. My family had a lot of dysfunction and untimely deaths/ suicides.

We even half joke that we have a family ghost. She was a woman who died and we got all her stuff because she had no heirs.

We've always known there's no scientific proof of any of this and there are logical explanations for most of the things that happened.

Now I just feel very sorry for my 80 year-old mother. She's beyond being reasoned with. She's blaming her physical illnesses and everything bad in her life on her being cursed. I think she's just lashing out.

I've been trying to determine if I really do have BPD. But, I guess my point is, that if I do then certain traits of it were outright taught to me from my family. Multi generations of personality disorders? Faulty thinking? As my father-in-law said, I have bad DNA???

Ho, hum - if you were taught to have unhelpful thoughts you can be taught to not have them, although no one says it is easy.

If you have the misfortune to have BPD then perhaps you should investigate this with a suitably qualified professional.

However I am sorry to hear you and your family have been so unfortunate.

50 is not so old.
