I am caretaking for an elderly man (79), that has Type II diabetes, CHF congestive heart failure), insomnia, GERD/Acid Reflux, depression and anxiety.

He fell (at home), down 4 stairs and fractured his hip and femur. He has rod in his femur from hip to knee, with several screws in his pelvis. He is in constant pain (5 or 6), most of the time. He has has a Physical Therapist come out, once a week , for him to exercise, 10x reps with about 10 various positions. Now he is refusing ALL therapy. I'm at a loss to figure out "how" to get him to accept therapy and progress beyond the pain. He just doesn't want to do "anything"?

He told me (after the last therapist visit), that he would not be continuing with his therapy because he does not like his therapist. She is too bossy. He said he was going to fire her.

Should I talk with his therapist?

Sometimes he tells me that he just wants to die.

I just don't know "what" to do?

Please Help!
Hugs from:

Dear Buffy72,

What a stressful and distressing situation to be in. My heart goes out to you. I wish I knew what to say that would be helpful. I think you are a saint!

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen

Thank you for your comments.
As of now, I'm just taking it "day by day".
His feet/ankles and legs are swelling from inactivity/heart failure.

l'm here for him, as he needs assistance along this journey.

Hello Buffy72,

You're definitely in a difficult situation. Is he able to walk at all. I am caregiving for my husband, and I encourage him to be as independent as possible.

buffy maybe with his permission you can talk to his caseworker in medicare program he is signed up for. If he does not have a caseworker, maybe you could call insurer that handles medicare Gap insurance with his permission and request one. He does need more attention from what you say.
