I'm wondering how everyone feels about "labels", and the labels we are given. I was recently having this discussion with someone.
I'm asking because my entire life I loved fashion labels, abhorred labels for people, of any kind, and now find only what I can describe as freedom with the knowledge of mine. How have "labels" changed us? How does society react to them? QL

Hi! I think labels can make a difference. I have bipolar disorder and it was called manic-depressive disorder. Manic leads to mania and someone being called a "maniac," for example. Bipolar disorder sounds less scary, I think. Of course, "mentally ill" sound better than "crazy"!

I don't really have strong feelings one way or the other--but I feel relieved knowing what my illness is!
Sometimes, people don't like the idea of "labels." My niece has a mental disability. She was going to go to college, and wanted to utilize the disability services on campus, but she didn't want to be "labeled," so she didn't go on account of that. My sister doesn't like labels at all, and thinks most mental illnesses are faked or caused by demons, or living in sin. (Of course, she makes an exception for her daughter!) Like I said, I don't really mind it--because finding that out has actually helped me. (p.s. I think Payne1 has a good point.)
