Anybody heard of Polyvagal Theory? I was discussing a relationship problem with a substitute therapist (my regular T has been unavailable due to a family crisis). The substitute is a consultant, well-trained, and was trying to be helpful, no doubt, making suggestions about how I could have handled the situation better. But that wasn’t really the problem. So I told her “I just really don’t understand the dynamics. What was going on here with my friend and me?” So she told me about Polyvagal Theory and boy, does that explain a lot! It’s like a great untold secret about why many of us with PD’s are the way we are! I think I can probably use the theory to help me question and change some of my typical reactions – now that I’ve gone through all the feeling-work of dealing with trauma.
