Has anyone ever been told they have more than one personality disorder? I have been told during my assessments that I scored highly in Schizoid, Paranoid and Borderline personality traits.....but I have only been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.
So what about the other 'problems' I may have??!! Why aren't they being mentioned anymore and being addressed?? Anyone else been told they have more than one personality disorder?

You can have more than one personality disorder at a time but usually you have a "dominant" one and others that you almost have, tendencies in those directions. It's necessary with any DX to treat things "in order" and borderline covers the most ground I think.
I found in therapy that if I addressed one thing over "here" than something else over "there" was affected and vice versa. Working on anything well should help everything. __________________ "Never give a sword to a man who can't dance." ~Confucius |

I have PD NOS with maInly 'borderline' characteristics which means
i am seen as being 'personality disordered 'across several areas without being judged to meet the clinical benchmark for any specific PD. I think 'mixed PD' may sometimes still be used for those who are seen as having more than one full blown PD. |

A lot of people who meet criteria for one personality disorder also meet criteria for a second, or possibly more. I have been diagnosed with Dependent and Avoidant, and I feel that BPD fits too, maybe even better or a more complete description for me. All of the personality disorders are really descriptions of traits that are patterns in your life. They aren't going to be comprehensive descriptions of you, but may show what kinds of patterns are problems for you. And some of us have more than one overlapping pattern. I would guess that we all do, since people are pretty complicated.

I have a few as well but the dominate one in my T's mind is borderline. I also have other traits we've talked about as antisocial, histrionic, paranoid, obsessive and dependent... It can all be overwhelming can't it? Just try to focus on how you feel in and out of therapy and tell your T about it. It's hard....but we need to do it

I'm afraid that I can't remember the reference, but I remember reading somewhere that 40% of people who have one dx of a personality disorder have a dx of more than one personality disorder.
You can have 'traits' that are in line with a personality disorder diagnosis, but not have enough of the symptoms, or not have the symptoms of sufficient intensity to warrant additional diagnoses. Knowing that you have traits of other personality disorders can be useful to know with respect to treatment, however. |

I have Dependent, Avoidant and Borderline. This was found out this summer during my month long visit to the hospital.

The personality disorders section of the DSM is one of the most controversial.
In particular, while the DSM is categorical in approach (you either have a disorder or you don't, you either have disorder A or disorder B and you shouldn't really have both) it is widely accepted that the presence and absence of personality disorder, and which personality disorder you have is more a matter of degree. Controversial issues include trying to figure out the dimensions of personality such that we can locate a particular persons personality profile on those dimensions. I guess the most commonly accepted is the 'big five' though there is a great deal of controversy surrounding that. Their is an alternative diagnostics manual to the DSM called the PDM (Psychodynamics diagnostic manual). Has a very nice section on personality disorders (casts them fairly differently from the DSM) if you might be interested in that... |

Ive done alot of research on it all because I have struggled to actually understand it all (and still havent a clue in some areas lol)
I've been told that bein on the borderline is catagorised into different aspects and that it is completely normal to have different personality traits or illnesses with this disorder, and that it can vary from each person. Also my friend has been diagnosed with it aswell and we find that even though because were the same and we understand every action eachother takes, we both have different personality traits and deal with things different ways Aye, it sure is overwhelming... ^^^ hope that all makes sense haha __________________ ~ HEY! I thought I was a 'mirror narcissist' because I kept falling in love with or being fascinated with narcissistic types. But in therapy, I was told schizoid. What I have realised is that having had a narcissistic mother, as a schiz, we are invaded sort of thing, and we get imprinted with the other person's disorder, but that one is like a top plate, for me the fundamental structure is self in exile, (ie schizoid), so that although I 've got some traits, its more like the mirroring trait is loaded up onto the fundamental exile structure, so thats the one I most need to deal with. Its the internal stuff thats important, I believe, the external is just a variety of ways we deal with whats inside. When I read about self in exile, I could see my T. was right.

Lennie, I wanted to ask if I could anonnymously quote something you said some time ago for the website, but I feel it may be a bit unfair asking you as I'm concerned it may make you feel put on the spot. Thanks Lennie. This is really helpful to what I'm trying to do.
What I'll do is scramble/ change your name to preserve anonymity, or if you like you could chose a name of your own new one. if you keep an eye on the website, you'll see how its been fitted in, its still not finished, but getting nearer. I am really grateful, its just what you said, sort of captured so many aspects of the whole self in exile expereince. If you like, I'll explain more about why I think what you said expresses things so well. Theres an aspect of this that I'd like to ask your opinion on too, but I dont want to go on at great length without that you express an interest. All the best, hope you well. riverx
