Ok, so I realized that there are people out there that practically scream when they talk. I realized my best friend screaming at me triggered me because my dad used to scream at me from the time I was a baby until I turned 18.

Personally I try to avoid people in general, when someone triggers me I get just as angry as you described above. I try to avoid people that trigger me or if its not possible to avoid them I try to be careful of what I say or talk about so nothing leads to things that can trigger me.

Are you in regular therapy to work on healthy coping and interpersonal skills?

I agree, keep yourself away from the person. If you have to deal with the person, request what you don't want to deal with from that person. Remove yourself from the room as soon as possible. Repeat what is said if there is no escape in a safer way, kind of like damage control to yourself. Positive affirmation spoken to yourself can also be helpful.

I've been trying to get into one on one therapy since the beginning of March.

I avoid basements and dark places, I avoid people that are angry a lot for anger scares me, I avoid people who drink so much they smell like stale beer and cigs, and most of all I avoid the state where my abuser now lives. Sometimes I can't avoid a trigger but therapy helps with learning how to cope with that.
I wish you the best and hope that you can finally get into therapy soon waiting since March is a long time. *hugs* |
