I was with him for 8 years and he was emotionally/mentally/sometimes physically abusive. I've been to counseling and was diagnosed with PTSD. I never really thought that was accurate but as time goes on I see it more and more. Example: I am startled VERY easily to the point of tears. I know it's from my history with my ex and living in a house where I was scared for my own life, but I've been away from him for 10 months. Is this still normal? What can I do to ease my fears? Do you have similar experiences? TIA

I'm a survivor of medical torture, for three months in 2011. I still don't feel truly safe anywhere. I can't stand to have people behind me. Some days I don't dare to go to sleep.

No, it isn't unusual.
