Hi, just wondering on people's thoughts on the subject of "why a therapist wouldn't do emdr with a patient "
Not looking for absolutes, but just thoughts on the subject... I can find a worlds worth of knowledge on why therapist do emdr with ptsd patients but am struggling to find pointers on people who aren't truly candidates that have ptsd or cptsd. ----- My personal experience: I have had three therapists so far say we would do emdr but not one of them did it with me..... I'm just trying to understand possible why not ,as none of them explained why not. Am I always so "too stressed out" that they feel we can start? I'm just very confused... Has anyone else experienced the talk of emdr being a possible treatment but it's never followed through by the professional? When the therapists suggested the possibility of doing EMDR did you pick up on it, show interest? If not, maybe they figured you weren't interested in pursuing the EMDR path. If you did show interest but none of the therapists went with it if I were you, I'd ask what their reasoning is. __________________ |

1. EMDR is contraindicated for alexithymic people. 2. EMDR in general is contraindicated for people who are not yet ready to face their emotional memories. All the emotional details of the traumatic memories. You do have to get to that point in your processing if you are not ready yet. My personal opinion is frankly that if you are ready to face the emotional details, you don't even need EMDR anymore. Because at that point it's pretty simple really compared to how it is before that point. You just need old fashioned processing of emotions while using strong grounding practices, whatever personally works for you to ground you. I think EMDR is just one way of grounding. Strictly my personal opinion. PS: And yes, EMDR is stressful, and so is you working on the emotional memories with any kind of strong grounding practice. So yeah, you have to be able to take the stress too. |

I have done EMDR with three different therapists for about 5 years all total.
My last EMDR therapist released me after over a year of working together because I had become very suicidal. She explained to me that it wasn't safe to continue. I've since returned to it. EMDR is not easy. Nasty things rise to the surface of your conscious mind so that you can effectively reprocess them so you are desensitized to horrible memories. EMDR and propranolol are the only things I've ever found to work on my CPTSD. The therapists should have explained it to you. Frankly I think you managed to hit the trifecta of really sucky therapists. There is a website that lists all licensed EMDR therapists. There are a few bad apples in any profession, but you should always check for their license.
