I hate the word “sissy”, I hate it with a passion. Why is it when someone gets upset when people are being mean and hurtful to them, they are labeled as a “sissy” or “weak”?

I had a woman call me a sissy after talking to her about my experiences with being bullied, and she said it wasn’t bullying and that I was being a sissy. She also thinks I’m a man when I’m not. She must also think that men (and people in general) who open up about being abused or bullied are “weak”. She was telling me how to live my life, how I should view bullying, and being very demanding and insensitive.

Calling someone a sissy is a sexist slur, in every way. For men, because they are told to always be strong and show no emotions. And for women, because they are always seen as hysterical and weak.

I’m just tired of this crap being thrown at to demonize victims of bullying. I’m tired of people telling me what is not bullying. If someone says something mean, I’m going to feel upset. That does not make me weak. Instead it makes me aware.

I'm sorry that this thing happened to you and happens to you.

There is a psychological theory [I don't know if it is true or not] that hatred directed outward is actually unbearable self-hatred that needs an escape.

It could be that the people who are cruel to you actually hate and abhor themselves. That does NOT justify what they do to you, however!

And I am sorry that these people lack basic humane traits. So sorry I don't know what to say to help you.

I can totally understand. I was called sissy all my life. My sister who was two years younger was a bully. She was into rugby and soccer and I was geeky and into video games and was a dirty fighter. She used to beat me up all the time in fights, and people called me sissy, wuss, the girl of the family for losing fights to her. I am also very sensitive to the word as no one seems to understand that guys can also be abused. Culturally, we are taught to be strong all the time and any show of being hurt is being a sissy, a loser or pathetic.

I think speaking about it will open up people’s mind that guys also have emotions and cannot always be the strongest.
