Hi there,
I'm currently 8.5 weeks pregnant with kiddo #2. When I was pregnant with my first, my little boy, I spent time in the hospital for depression. It was awful. The worst few weeks of my life. I had hoped it would never happen again. But I'm going through the same thing now and I'm afraid I'll end up in the hospital again. Away from my sweet boy. I've recently increased my meds, so I'm waiting for them to kick in. Currently they are just making me more anxious, but I know that's just temporary. Does anyone else have experience with antepartum depression? I'd love to know that I'm not alone. Thank you! |

Hello, and welcome to Psych Central! I had some trouble with postpartum depression with my first, but I just felt anxious for some reason during all my second pregnancy. I wasn't clinically depressed or anything, but I just wasn't as happy either as with the first one and felt more miserable over all.
When I saw the title of your post, my first thought was "Why should she be happy?" Not all pregnancies are planned, the mom is possibly frazzled with dealing with the first child, etc. Please try not to feel guilty. You are doing all you can with the meds. |

Thank you for your note. I am so miserable! I can't even sleep. This seems like it's going to be my 3rd sleepless night in a row. I'm not sure what to do...

I have some experience with depression during pregnancy. I had an awful time when I was between 6 weeks pregnant and 16 weeks pregnant. Luckily, it got better with no medication and some therapy. But then it came back with a vengeance after the baby was born.

Don't blame yourself for "shoulds". It is what it is. I was never the glowing pregnant type. I didn't care much for being pregnant. And then I had awful postpartum depression. I hope you can get some sleep soon.

I was depressed my entire pregnancy, it was not planned, I am still struggling with depression and anxiety, but it has gotten a little tiny bit better with help. Have you seen a therapist? I think everyone could go to a therapist just to get some help with day to day life. It is such a huge help to have someone there to help you. I highly recommend seeing one.

Pregnant with first baby (9 weeks). Suffering from depressed mood for past three weeks now. Extreme nausea and fatigue driving me to the brink of despair. Unable to function at work and avoiding friends and family who expect me to be happy and cheerful. Hate feeling this way. Hoping the second trimester brings relief...

You're not alone. I'm pregnant with #2 and also depressed, was planning on going out to the shop but literally can't face the drama of getting both me and kiddo out of the house, so just put on the TV. Therapy and a good supportive midwife should help... basically support. Do you have much support where you are?
