What the possible reactions or side effects to mixing Celexa with weed could be? Last night I found out that one of my friends is doing this. While she was staying off the weed, she seemed to improve. Now she's back to smoking and she's so disconnected, forgetful and GROUCHY!
![]() I'm thinking that her nightly smoking is having these ill effects. She's almost impossible to be around.

Im not sure which is the chicken and which is the egg but ive been pretty grouchy lately as well with my increase of marijuana use in the last month or two. I kinda assumed the anger was always there and now that the depression doesnt have me in the vise grips that it can come out easier. On the other hand doesnt it seem weird that marijuana would make people grouchy? I always figured it made people mellow. But i definately am noticing the grouchyness. Intresting topic anyway.

i used to think that it calmed me down...but I haven't smoked in a couple of months now...but have been more regular in taking my antidepressant...I find that i'm on a more even keel....part of the anxiety was always the worry that when i ran out..was the next supply going to be available....i'm glad i'm not worrying about that now.....g

I could be wrong, but....I think the main problem is weed. It might help a person feel 'better', but after a while, that might change for the worse. Taking celexa on top of that certainly doesn't help. Since they both influence the way people 'feel' there may be a combined affect .

Shay, she gets grouchy when she's not high. She usually smokes at night, get this, to watch TV!? I don't get it. LOL But then, during the day is when she displays all the other symptoms.
She takes Celexa for depression. Since I've known her, which has been YEARS! she's always been kinda moody. Now it's really bad, though. ![]()

Yeah, she's calm, funny and has motor mouth when she's high. She's a real pain in the butt when she's not. It's never bothered me to be around people who have been smoking pot; I've done it on occasion myself. But it's really pissing me off with her! I just don't want to be around her during the day and I have better things to do at night when she's loaded.

That's what I'm thinking, too, SS. She told me when she first got put on Celexa that the Dr said no alcohol or weed. So what does she do?? She smokes! ARGH!

Is Cam still around? I wish I could get my hands on a medical report that says what combining the two does to you so I could shove it in front of her, or maybe even hit her over the head with the rolled up paper, shove it up her nose, or SOMETHING!! LOL This is really bothering me!!

Septembermorn - I hate to be the bearer of news you don't wanna hear, but there is really no interaction between SSRIs (like Celexa™ - citalopram) and cannabis. The grouchiness and disconnectedness is the pot talking. The cannabis is an escape, plain and simple. That's why people use it. The good news is is that it is fairly non-toxic when compared to other substances used for the same reason (ie. escape from reality). Just be glad it's not cocaine, ecstasy, or even alcohol. Actually, of these 3, alcohol probably the worst. Alcohol's effects seem to be intensified when one is taking an SSRI (and I've never really figured out a mechanism as to why). As for the ecstacy, SSRIs tend to deaden the high. Cocaine in moderation is safe, physiologically speaking (as long as one is young and healthy); the only problem is is that with its short half-life and intense activity in the brains pleasure center (nucleus accubens) it is almost impossible to use in moderation, when used for escaping reality.
In a way you can be glad she's apathetic and lethargic; it will keep her out of trouble (ie. little impulsivity). There is a very rare condition called cannabis psychosis, but chances of that happening are scant. As long as the pot isn't an every day thing and her life doesn't revolve around getting more, to stay doped, there should be little problem. Most people do grow out of using pot; I think that most people just come to realize that not being able to think clearly is rather frustrating. Also, you can only sit like a lump in front of the T.V. so long (well, maybe not a teenager, but you'd expect an adult to get bored with that rather fast). You can discourage her use of cannabis, just don't be fanatical about it. The more you make a big deal out of it, the more she'll be tempted to keep using it.. She knows that she can get you worked up by smoking it, and it gives her a reason to keep using it (it reminds her of being young and a rebel). Sorry that I don't have any legitimate ammunition that you can use. Just be glad she's made a relatively non-toxic and benign choice (aside from any legal ramifications). - Cam |
