My experience is that I have gained a lot of weight. I mean a lot. Without changing what I eat or how I exercise the weight has just pounded on. But having said that, each med effects each person differently so I would say give it a go. It's also the only med that really works for me. So there's a good and bad to it.

Love and Hugs,
Tara

I just started Effexor and before I did, I did a lot of reading... I won't take it if it causes weight gain. I read that it can suppress your appetite, and usually there is no weight gain. And it some cases it causes weight loss.
I guess I won't know until I've been on it longer.. but I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt..

I've been on Effexor for years and haven't gained any weight. If anything I had the opposite happen, it really messed up my interest in food, I just became very blech about eating anything. And it completely changed my sense of taste. Before Effexor I used to like red wine and chocolate, post Effexor can't stand either.

My pdoc knew weight was an issue for me, I'm heavy anyways, and she said that Effexor was one of the better AD's for weight gain side effects.

My pdoc specifically prescribed this antidepressant for me b/c I was concerned with weight gain. I was on a mood stabilizer that caused weight gain and was desperate to counteract it. The Effexor XR has not caused me to gain weight. Actually, possible weight loss is listed as one of its side effects.

I had the most dreadful side effects with Effexor, the worst being the unexplained weight gain. My pdoc insisted it wasn't the drug but that I was eating in secret. Needless to say I lost all faith in the drug as well as my pdoc.

I was on effexor a short while, and had severe anorexia. Other bad side effects too...I am now on Paxil and hungry all the time. You can't win sometimes.

I am currently on 300mg Effexor. I have not gained any weight. In fact, my doctor put on it because Paxil caused me to gain 35 pounds very quickly and I was so discouraged by that (I work for Weight Watchers--what a joke!)Anyway, I've actually been able to lose weight with a little effort. I have had a change in taste, no more junk food cravings! sometimes, I think if I lived alone, I wouldn't eat all my meals. But because I have a husband, he expects dinner...and I join him. It has been a great medication for me. It saved my life from suicidal ideas and a very dark depression!

I found effexor extremely helpful. I didn't gain weight on it, it helped a lot with my issues, but I found the sexual side effects impossible to live with.

Were you hypersexual or hyposexual?

Effexor made me a nervous shaky mess. With my rapid heart beat and jittery hands and legs, I'd guess that had I stayed on it longer than a couple of weeks it would've been like a diet pill for me (phen phen or something).

Well it wasn't exactly that my sex drive itself was affected at first, but it was like I was numb from the waist down. No matter what we tried things weren't happening downstairs. I mean I love my husband and enjoyed the closeness but after having a healthy sex life for 20 years then nothing eventually affected my attitude.
