Im wondering how I would know if the medication is working or if the dose is the correct dose for me?

I have been on lexapro now since mid-august and going up in dose every couple of weeks. I am not having long bouts of crying all day but I can still do that for shorter periods of time. I feel suicidal less often, but I still do spend a lot of time feeling that way. And I have SI'd when I feel overwhelmed (but Im making more of an effort to not do that).

Will the medication make sui thoughts go away? And the urge to cut? I still feel very depressed.
I was expecting to feel better than I do.

It's a process. It takes time to feel the effects, find the right medication and get to the right dosage. Talk to your doctor about therapy too. It helps make the medication more productive. It's hard to say if it will be responsible for your change in thinking, but therapy can help that too. The darkness will start to lift though, that I can promise.

[quote=BlueMoon6;1142431]Im wondering how I would know if the medication is working or if the dose is the correct dose for me? /quote]When you see your prescriber, they will ask you questions to help determine if the current med and dose is working or not. They will compare your answers to ones you gave on previous visits. Taking an SSRI since mid-August isn't that long. Sometimes they take 6-8 weeks to kick in, plus you haven't been on the current dose for that long. I know it's hard, but be patient and see what happens. When do you see your prescriber next?

I don't know if medication will help with the urge to cut. Does your prescriber think it will? You may have to attack that issue by other methods.

I do think meds can help with suicidal thoughts.

These are all great questions to ask your prescriber at the next visit.
