Hi all!

I started taking the "fast acting" 4-6 hour Adderall in August. I started off at 20 mg (10 mg 2X/day). Last week with meeting my doctor, I was increased to 50-60 mg / day (20 mg AM, 20 mg Mid-AM and 10-20 mg early afternoon). Can't say I am enjoying the side effects again, but at least I know there is an end in sight!

I noticed I smoke more now that I am on Adderall. I have talked to a coworker of mine (who also happens to be ADHD, smokes and on Adderall) and they said they have the same thing happen. They also said that anyone they have talked to who are on Adderall and smoke report the same thing, the increase in their smoking.

Has anyone else had this happen?

I had been smoking from 15 yrs. old-23 (when had a preemie baby due to my smoking & drinking while pregnant--talk about GUILT so I quit both after she was born). Just cold turkey.

BUT then at age 35 or so I started smoking again due to falling into a deep depression for about 10 yrs. Then I went into intensive outpatient treatment at the hospital...

I take Concerta & meds for bipolar. Once I got the meds straightened out I was able to QUIT smoking. I just didn't need to "self medicate" myself in that way . I enjoyed smoking, but I didn't like being a "slave" to it & w/the proper meds somehow I was able to just give it up. Wanted something better for myself. Best of luck to all you smokers. I know it is hard. It is like an all purpose drug--calms you or energies you when needed...

Here is a clinical trial going on right now to try to answer some of these questions:

OOPs, I think there is a misunderstanding here.

I am on Paxil CR (now down to 25 mg a day) and Klonopin (.5 mg PRN) and had quit smoking last October on Chantix. I started again in March (watching your best friend's life implode and you are the closest thing to family for them will do it). In August I was diagnosed Inattentive ADHD, and I started on Adderall (quick release...)

The question isn't will the Adderall help me stop smoking (though I know I need to, but I need to get my head straight first). It's - has anyone else noticed when they take Adderall and are a smoker, that they smoke MORE being on the Adderall then they did when they weren't on the Adderall?

Thanks!

I understand and that is why I posted that clinical trial for you. It is studying the interaction between ADHD, stimulants, and smoking for exactly the reason you say: many people with ADHD smoke MORE when they are on stimulants (do a google search) and this study seeks to understand that in a controlled way so that they may learn better how to taylor smoking cessation programs to people with ADHD. I just thought you'd be interested that scientists are studying the exact phenomenon that you report (so it's not just you!).

THANK YOU! I had skimmed it and not understood it. I will look at it much more carefully! Sorry for misunderstanding!
