It has taken about three months to take off the weight gain caused by the Seroquel. This is the third time I have had to take off weight due to one month of Seroquel use. Has anyone else had this sort of this with this drug???

I was on Seroquel for a couple months a year ago. It is a horrible, horrible drug and should be banned, imho. It made me practically comatose; incredibly tired and I gained a lot of weight on it too. I will never go on it again.

Yes, I was on only 100mg/day for about two years for insomnia and gained about 30lbs. It also did nasty stuff to my ability to concentrate.

I mentioned this in another post about seroquel......I put on it for a trauma I went through & had lost so much weight with the trauma that I ended up in the hospital for IV Nutrition.....so much weight loss it was considered anorexia......so any weight gain would have actually been a benefit. I was on 600mg/night just to keep the nightmares away & allow me to sleep.....the comatose feeling was actually welcome also. Guess the trauma & the PTSD that I was experiencing counteracted any weight gain as it took me over a year to gain enough weight to be well again. I ended up on 25mg/night to sleep after a couple of years & still no real weight gain. Now I take it only occasionally when I am really desperate for sleep.
Think that the body's metabolism has a lot to do with the weight gain, but I can see how it does slow down the metabloism with the comatose feeling it leaves me in the next day....when I don't function & don't move, the body can only take calories & put on weight when they aren't used up.

You're right Eskie. Metabolism has a lot to do with weight issues. Thank you for your reply. phoenix47baby

Hi to you guys,
I know that I've really jumped ahead here in my forum writing but, I caught this thread and had both an answer as well as, a question. (I should actually be introducing myself first since I'm new to this forum as well as any forum to be honest). But, like I had mentioned I was given Seroquel as an alternative to help me sleep and for times when my GAD and Panic Disorder was way too much to handle. I tried not to use it that much because it's always left me feeling groggy, as if I've just come out of a drug-coma and just not what I was looking for. (Basically, I left it to sit in the cupboard and put up the sleepless nights and excessive panic attacks during the day). Yet, when I was taking it even such a small dose and for small periods of time, my psychiatrist/psychologist gave me the disclaimer for the medication as well as sent me to visit with this inhouse nurse/nutritionist because of the drug's side effect of weight gain. And I did experience myself even though I wasn't a typical everyday user of this medication. Since a new medication has come onto the market up here that's better for what I need it for, I've replaced the Seroquel with it and so far no problems. Here's my question part of this post; I am in Canada (Vancouver, BC to be exact) and of course, we have different regulations with everything. But, I'm curious if there's been any red flags come up with Seroquel at all down in the US? Even if there wasn't an issue of the drug not working that well for me, we did have the discussion of whether or not I wanted to continue taking it because it's one that's coming out of the trial phase - like many now - (the15yr mark) and lawsuits are starting to pop up for very serious health problems. The medication that I had preferred over Seroquel I found out, is already taken completely off of the market up here and then I found out that Seroquel is pretty much on it's way out as well. (Some, if not many prescribers won't even give patients the decision to decide as to whether or not they want to continue or switch to something else). I decided to switch by the way and was given a prescription for Invega which is new on the market and does the same as Seroquel - essentially but, to date there's been no complaints of weight gain. I guess my question was more out of curiousity than anything. I now know to keep up to date with the US Food and Drug site to see if there's any information that comes up over the years. The Canadian site does the same as well and you can go back quite a few years and there's sadly enough, quite a few medications that will come up with reports on them for this reason or another. (It's all about staying current with what we're putting in our systems. It can be scary a lot of the time, even trying to get past the medication side effects pages when taking a new medication). Wish you all well and take care! Eternal_Frisson |

I know nothing about any pending litigation with Seroquel. Glad to hear that you have found a reasonable substitute with Invega. i think I am going to do a little research on that med. Thanks for the insight.

So which one is worse? Zyprexa or Seroquel? I was on Zyprexa for 2 weeks and gained 10 lbs. I've been on seroquel for almost 2 weeks now, and I think i've lost the weight from the Zyprexa (i haven't actually weighed myself yet).

If I were to vote, I would vote to take Seroquel first and Zyprexa last. Actually I wouldn't agree to take Zyprexa because of the weight gain I witnessed on a friend of mine, but everyone's system is different. Good Luck. Sending kind thoughts your way.
