Is anyone on or has anyone been on Geodon?
Was it helpful? Was it sedating? Did you lose weight? Did you gain weight?

Hi Berries,
I take Geodon in the evening (about 2 hours before bed) as I find it to be sedating. I do find it to be extremely helpful. It is known to be weight neutral, although I have lost some weight on it. Are you thinking about going on Geodon or did your pdoc recently prescribe it for you? |

I am thinking of asking my pdoc to prescribe it. I am on seroquel now and have gained weight on it. Plus it has a history of causing diabetes and high cholesterol.
I read that geodon will allow you to lose enough weight to get back to your baseline.

I hope to get on it if Zyprexa doesn't work or causes severe weight gain. I don't like the diabetes prospects.
Hope you get to try Geodon. Seroquel sucks for some people. ![]() ![]()

Berries, I think with any antipsychotic there is a greater chance to get diabetes, but thankfully that has not been the case for me. I haven't come across reports about higher cholesterol levels with Geodon. My cholesterol is 117 and I've been back on Geodon now for about 2 years, but I'm on a moderate dose. I'll have to check my lab reports for cholesterol for when I was on a much higher dose a few years ago.
Thinker, I've heard that Zyprexa has weight gain like Seroquel, thus the possibility of diabetes. |

No weight gain for me. In fact I lost 12 lbs. since being back on it. Geodon is considered weight neutral.

I've been tried on Geodon twice; the first time in the beginning of '08 (160mg/80mg twice a day) and the second time in the summer of '08 (120 mg/60mg twice a day). It seemed to alleviate the dysphoric irritable moods I'm bothered with. But despite that, Geodon was one of those meds that gave me a handful of side effects. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Geodon is SEDATION. Geodon was THE MOST SEDATING med I've ever been on. Anyway, it knocked me out like a light bulb for 12 hours with no wake up in between the sleep (that I can remember)...And I fell asleep sitting in during groups; the therapists/social workers had to wake me up at the end of the groups and when I woke up I noticed everyone left already without any of my notice beforehand...Also one time I had trouble driving home from church; I had such a hard time staying awake behind the wheel and it was so hard to keep my eyes open. Over time though, it's sedating effect wore off. Other side effects included that when I first started Geodon, shortly afterwards I started to talk funny and then my jaw started to stiffen, and ended up locking open into a very painful, awkward, rigid position and I couldn't close my mouth to chew my food during lunch (a dose of Cogentin eventually alleviated that). Also when I first started Geodon, it gave me farsightedness, where I couldn't read things at a regular distance from my eyes; I had to put text from a further-than-normal distance from my face so that I could read. My eyesight eventually recovered after a little while. However, after a while of being on Geodon, I started to get some sort of tardive dyskinesia where my tounge involuntarily thrusted forward, so I stopped Geodon.
EDIT: By the way, I don't think Geodon contributed to any weight gain, which Seroquel seemed to have later apparently done so. |

BLAHHHhh had the worst reaction to it of all time! My jaw locked, my tounge swollen, and had involuntary face movements. (I had a Dumb perma smile for about 30 mins till the counter-drug worked.) My hands now curl and cramp on there own, and my jaw is severely stiff from the adverse effects of it (Even today!) Its not going away and the Dr told me its perma.
I didnt like it, it made me into a zombie and couldnt even walk. It was horrible in my opinion. Make sure you do your research and PLEASE if you do take it, PLEASE watch out for muscle stiffness in your face, jew and neck, muscle twitches on your face (eyebrows and mouth). GET help before it gets worst. I waited because the Dr just said "Oh it will go away" Go away my *****. |

[quote=Berries;1183100]Is anyone on or has anyone been on Geodon?
Was it helpful? Geodon was very helpful Was it sedating? it helped me to sleep through the night Did you lose weight? Did you gain weight? yes, 30 lbs the first time I was on geodon back in my 20s and received great benefits with only one side effect, weight gain. I had stop taking it for awhile because my husband lost his job and I couldn't afford full price of over $300 at that time. Well after years of being off it and on another medication I decided to try it again since the cost went down. I am greatly saddened by the turn of events. I can no longer tolerate geodon. I experienced jaw clenching so bad my face is swollen and my poor teach hurt from the pressure. I am back on seroquel xr hoping the clenching will stop but missing my sleep. Since stopping it I have gone back to waking up at 3am every night and I take sleeping pills to try and keep that under control with little results. ![]() |

ive been on geodon for a couple of months, and it has helped quite a bit with my issues. it was very sedating at first, it made me very sleepy after i had taken it, but i actually like that part because it greatly regulated my sleeping schedule and now i dont stay up till 3am and sleep well into the afternoon. i haven't experienced any weight loss/gain (at least not yet) but i have heard that it is weight neutral. and the only side effects that i have gotten from geodon was some nausea when i first started taking it, but that eventually went away. i used to be on risperdal, and prefer geodon over risperdal much more.

I take Geodon and it has been one of few that I could tolerate. Abilify caused me to be manic with uncontrollable anger and appetite. Zyprexa Zydis caused me to just lie on a couch with an increased appetite and I gained like 20 pounds in the month I was on it, munching on chips and granola bars in-between sleeping on the couch. Geodon causes no sedation for me, thought two hours after taking it I am more relaxed but still require sleeping pills to put me to sleep because I am an anxious person. I don't even have to take Cogentin and have never had problems with tardive dyskensia.
Geodon makes me fix small meals for myself with no snacking at all and my cholesteral levels were fine being on it for more than a year. I take Risperdal in combimation with it but am switching that to Invega, but I have been doing remarkably well, except that I had a bit of anxiety and now take Klonopin when I wake up to lower my anxiety and akithisia. Right now I am going really well and with Geodon I feel fine except that I always wish I could be drug free and feel like I did when I was younger. Overall Geodon is my drug of choice and when first taking it, it was like a hit of marijuana but it kindof fades with repeated use and leaves you a little bit icky feeling but stable for me, and stable is more important. Zyprexa and Abilify were bad drugs for me and did not interact well with me, and I gained weight on them, so I am glad I am back to normal. I am overweight but not obese according to BMI. I have actually lost weight after reswitching to Geodon. If it works then that's great but if you have the side affects the other people have mentioned I would look for a different drug. I took Geodon for a year and found that it does do a lot for my symptoms and makes me not hungary at all. I only gained about three pounds on this drug, which to me, makes it a keeper. However, I developed tics in the face and had to take it only at night because it knocked me out like a light. Was zombie-like when I took it during the day.
I recently switched to Abilify and find it to be more energizing and am able to tolerate it during the day. Geodon did nothing my depression. Abilify helps with the depression a lot, along with 20mgs of Lexapro. Thus far, like the Abilify, but will keep you updated on effects.

I have been on Geodon for three years.. I take cogentin with it because it caused involuntary movement of my hands.. It has never made me tired.. I take it twice a day..It has helped quite abit with my irrational thoughts. I am also on four other meds..They have caused me to gain weight..In my book geodon works great..
