Hi!
I have recently been put on Neurontin for my severe social anxiety (I've heard that it's worked for other people, so I thought I'd give it a try), and was reading up on it on the internet yesterday. Among other things, one of the side effects listed was WEIGHT GAIN. I do not want to gain any weight in any way, shape, or form. Has anyone else gained weight from this drug? Has anyone had any bad experiences? Any good ones? Any help would be greatly appreciated! MrsLovett |

I didn't have any side effects at all with Neurontin. I liked it a lot.
I would imagine any medication that calms anxiety *could* lead to *some* weight gain because of the subsiding nervous energy. So I wonder if you could plan to add some regular exercise to take the place of that and all would be fine ![]() |

I'm not taking it anymore then. That's it. Thank you for your reply

Why? I'm confused about your reply.
Why wouldn't you wait to see how it works for you? Other's experiences are theirs. When the manufacturers list side effects, they list them even when the chance is extremely low. Is there some other reason you don't want to take it, or that you want to reject it? |

I'm not going to take because I need to lose weight seriously, and I've had medications cause extreme weight gain in the past. I know, this one might not, but I don't want to take that chance. I don't really need to be on any additional meds anyway. I'm on far too many. It would be nice to get off some of them for once!

Hi again,
Thank you for your input. I've heard varying reports on Neurontin and just got a little scared. I have continued to take it. Actually, it's been less than a week since I started taking it. I'm just a little frustrated because I've been having a hard time losing weight lately and have even gained a little in the past couple of weeks ![]() I also ran across the same type of thing (weight gain) about another med that I am taking, Lamictal. My question is the same for this medication. Am I just crazy? I'm thinking of looking up all of my meds (again). I've done it in the past, but my brain's so screwy that I don't remember anything from day-to-day anymore. Why am I so dumb now? I used to be so smart. Where did it all go? ![]() MrsLovett |

Side effects from withdrawing from a medication can be largely avoided by weaning off (instead of suddenly stopping) the medication, with the advice and care of your physician.
Remember too, that social anxiety is about feeling anxious in social situations. The medication is for the physical effects of that. Psychotherapy helps with the underlying issues about the social anxiety: what your fears are (that cause the anxiety/panic symptoms) when you are in social situations, talking to another person you may not know well, doing things outside the comfort of your home. It is about how you feel about you and about others in relation to you. A social situation is not dangerous in itself. They happen all the time, every day. It is what we bring to that social situation that causes us distress, fear, a desire to flee or avoid... |

Farmergirl is correct! Lamictal did not cause me to gain weight and I was on it for over a year. Also, I have been on Nuerontin now for a while and have ZERO side effects!
In my 31 years of taking any/all SSRIs, MAOIs, Tricyclic ADs, and Benzos, the only med that caused me weight gain was Paxil and I was on that for like three years before I even noticed the weight gain.
