I have just started dating someone who was a serious drug user in his teenage years (all illegal drugs) and suffers from anxiety and depression - possibly made worse by the drug use...
He has been clean for about 5 years... I take lexapro 10mg and have no problem with him being on anti-depressants aswell, I just know nothing about the meds that he is on. He is on 150mg of Effexor.. can anyone tell me about the dosage (is it high/low) and what sort of effect this drug has for depression?

Effexor is an SNRI, or serotonin, norepinephrine reuptage Inhibitor. It works by blocking the releasing neurons from reabsorbing the neurotransmitters, so that more of them are left if the synaptic cleft to be received by the receiving neuron.
150 mg is on the low end of the therapeutic range, but if it's working for him then it's the right dose. 225 mg is the therapeutic dose for many people on this med, as it's at that level that it starts to work on the norepinephrine as well as serotonin. You don't say how long your boyfriend has been on it, but I found it took me about 4 weeks before I noticed any slight improvement to my mood, and about 8 weeks on it before I noticed any real improvement. I take it. I'm on 375 mg and it's been a life saver for me. It pulled me out of a really deep depression. Common side effects are nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, and hand tremors. There are rarer, weird side effects to like really increased sweating, and changes in taste. I also got really bad headaches when I first started it - but they went away. One thing I will say, is that it's really important to take it at the same time, and not miss a dose. You can get really nasty withdrawl from this med. I'm ok with missing one day, but if I miss two days it's ugly. A site that I find really good for meds information is www.crazymed.us. It's a consumer run site so the language can be pretty blunt, but it's in plain english and easy to understand and the information is reliable. I've compared info I've gotten off of crazymeds with info from medline and they're always the same, just worded differently. I hope the Effexor helps him. --splitimage |
